Why Am I Seeing “Additional Quantities Encountered” in My Amazon Shipment?

Explains why Amazon flags “additional quantities” in shipments and how to prevent mismatches between your items and shipment plan.

Updated this week

If Amazon is flagging your shipment with “Additional Quantities Encountered”, it usually means they received an item that was not included in your original shipping plan.

What This Means

This is not about duplicate quantities.

Instead, Amazon is saying:

  • An item was unexpected (not in your shipment plan)

  • That item was used to offset a missing item in your shipment

So even if your counts seem correct, Amazon believes something doesn’t match the plan.

Why This Happens

Even when you’re careful, this can happen due to:

  • ❌ Wrong barcode or FNSKU applied to an item

  • ❌ Items from a different batch/shipment getting mixed in

  • ❌ Items scanned incorrectly during prep

  • ❌ Amazon mis-scanning or receiving errors on their end

Why Your Dispute May Be Rejected

If Amazon says:

“Unexpected items were used to account for missing items”

They usually reject disputes, because from their perspective:

  • Everything “balances out” internally

  • They don’t see a net loss in inventory

How to Prevent This

To avoid this issue in future shipments:

✅ Double-check FNSKUs

Make sure every item:

  • Has the correct label

  • Matches the ASIN in your shipment plan

✅ Keep Batches Separate

Avoid mixing:

  • Items from different batches

  • Items from previous shipments

✅ Scan Before Boxing

If possible:

  • Do a final scan before packing boxes

  • Confirm every item matches the shipment plan

When to Reach Out

If this keeps happening even when you’re confident everything is correct:

  • It may be an Amazon receiving issue

  • We can help you review and build a stronger case 👍
