Common Dimension Errors (and How to Fix Them)

Learn the most common dimension-related errors in FBA workflows and how to quickly fix them to avoid delays and issues.

🧭 Overview

When listing items or creating FBA shipments, dimension errors are one of the most common blockers.

👉 These errors usually happen because:

  • Amazon catalog data is incomplete

  • Dimensions are entered incorrectly

  • Required fields are missing

The good news: most of these issues are easy to fix once you know what to look for.

⚠️ 1. Missing Dimensions Error

❗ Error Message:

“Amazon requires package dimensions and weight to process this FBA item”

🔍 Cause:

  • Amazon has no dimension data for the ASIN

✅ Fix:

  • Manually enter:

    • Length

    • Width

    • Height

    • Weight

  • Then retry adding the item or creating the shipment

⚠️ 2. Incorrect Dimension Order

❗ Problem:

  • Length, width, and height entered incorrectly

🔍 Cause:

  • Not following Amazon’s format

✅ Fix:

👉 Always use:

  • Length = longest side

  • Width = second longest

  • Height = shortest side

⚠️ 3. Unrealistic or Invalid Values

❗ Error:

  • System rejects dimensions or causes placement failure

🔍 Cause:

  • Values are too small, too large, or unrealistic

✅ Fix:

  • Double-check measurements

  • Use reasonable estimates

  • Avoid extreme values (e.g., 0, negative, or very large numbers)

⚠️ 4. Missing Weight

❗ Error:

  • Cannot proceed with shipment

🔍 Cause:

  • Weight field left blank

✅ Fix:

  • Enter weight in lbs

  • Include packaging weight

⚠️ 5. Using Item-Only Dimensions

❗ Problem:

  • Shipment issues or incorrect fees

🔍 Cause:

  • Dimensions entered exclude packaging

✅ Fix:

👉 Always include:

  • Item + packaging size

⚠️ 6. Underestimating Dimensions

❗ Problem:

  • Receiving discrepancies or fee adjustments

🔍 Cause:

  • Entering values that are too small

✅ Fix:

  • Slightly round up your estimates

  • Add buffer for packaging

⚠️ 7. Units Mismatch

❗ Error:

  • Incorrect calculations or rejection

🔍 Cause:

  • Mixing inches with cm or lbs with oz

✅ Fix:

  • Use:

    • Inches (in) for dimensions

    • Pounds (lbs) for weight

⚠️ 8. Changes Not Reflecting Immediately

❗ Problem:

  • Error persists after entering dimensions

🔍 Cause:

  • Amazon hasn’t updated yet

✅ Fix:

  • Wait 30–60 minutes

  • Refresh or re-sync

  • Retry the process

⚠️ 9. Catalog Conflicts

❗ Problem:

  • Your entered dimensions don’t “stick”

🔍 Cause:

  • Amazon catalog overrides your data

✅ Fix:

  • Re-enter dimensions

  • Wait for sync

  • Retry shipment creation

⚠️ 10. Skipping Required Fields

❗ Error:

  • Cannot proceed

🔍 Cause:

  • One or more fields left blank

✅ Fix:

👉 Ensure all fields are filled:

  • Length

  • Width

  • Height

  • Weight

💡 Pro Tips

  • Use consistent estimates for similar items

  • Books often require manual input—be prepared

  • When in doubt, round up slightly
