If you're using MyHSA, you might be wondering who is responsible for issuing tax slips for taxable claims. Let's clear up the confusion!

MyHSA's Role in Taxable Claims Reporting

MyHSA does not send tax slips directly to employees. Instead, the responsibility for reporting taxable claims falls on your employer, also known as the Plan Administrator. Here's how it works:

  1. Taxable Claims Report: MyHSA provides a “Taxable Claims Report” within the employer’s Reports tab. This report outlines all the taxable claims made by employees over the year.

  2. Payroll Integration: Employers use this report to integrate the taxable claim amounts into their payroll system.

  3. T4 or Payslip Reporting: Once the employer has this information, they report the taxable amounts on either:

    • The employee’s payslip during the year, or

    • The employee’s T4 slip at year-end.

Why Doesn’t MyHSA Handle Tax Slips?

As a third-party benefits administrator, MyHSA's role is to provide tools and reports to help employers manage their benefits programs. Since taxable claims are considered a payroll item, it’s the employer’s responsibility to report these amounts as income for their employees.

This process ensures that taxable benefits are accurately included in the employee’s annual income for tax purposes.

What Should Employees Do?

If you're an employee, you don’t need to worry about receiving a separate tax slip from MyHSA. Instead:

  • Check Your Payslips or T4: Your taxable claims will already be included there.

  • Communicate with Your Employer: If you have questions about how your taxable claims are reported, reach out to your HR or payroll team.

By understanding this process, both employees and employers can ensure compliance with tax reporting requirements while making the most of their MyHSA benefits!
