Clarifies what student data Nearo does and does not collect when used for instruction.

Updated over 3 months ago

Nearo is designed for live, one-to-one instruction and intentionally limits the amount of student data it collects.

What student data does Nearo collect?

Nearo does not capture, store, or analyze instructional content or student performance data.

Nearo may collect limited student information only when required for access and basic session functionality, including:

  • A student name for display during a session

  • A student email address when an account or login is required

Nearo does not collect grades, assessments, behavioral data, learning analytics, or academic records.

What data is not collected about students?

Nearo does not:

  • Track student activity for advertising or marketing

  • Build student profiles or learning histories

  • Record sessions by default

  • Claim ownership of student data

  • Sell student or personal data

Audio, video, screen sharing, and remote control data are processed only in real time to run the session and are not stored unless a user explicitly enables recording.

How does Nearo handle student data in educational settings?

When Nearo is used by a school, tutoring organization, or educator:

  • The school or organization is typically the data controller for student data

  • Nearo acts as a service provider (data processor)

  • Student data is processed only under the direction of the educator or institution

Nearo is commonly used as a “school official” service provider under FERPA and does not use student data for secondary or commercial purposes.

Who is responsible for student consent and data policies?

Educational institutions, tutors, and organizations using Nearo are responsible for:

  • Providing required FERPA or privacy notices

  • Obtaining parental or student consent when required

  • Setting and enforcing their own data retention policies

If session recording is enabled, the user who enables recording is responsible for ensuring appropriate consent.

Where can I find Nearo’s full privacy terms?
