Create forward-looking revenue forecasts using NextStage Reports

Written by Josh Chua
Updated over a month ago

NextStage includes built-in financial forecasting measures that allow you to visualize expected revenue over time. These forecasts automatically distribute contract value across the Period of Performance (PoP), enabling accurate revenue forecasting and financial planning.

These forecasts are especially useful for:

  • Revenue forecasting

  • Financial planning

  • Executive reporting

  • Pipeline-to-revenue conversion analysis

Overview

NextStage forecasting reports use amortized revenue logic to spread contract value across the contract’s Period of Performance.

This allows you to see how revenue is expected to land over time rather than showing the full value at once.

Forecasts can be visualized monthly, quarterly, or annually using the Chart Builder.

Important: Use Version 2 Forecast Fields

NextStage provides an improved Version 2 (V2) forecasting model.

Always use:

  • V2 Forecast Measures
    with

  • V2 Forecast Time Dimensions

This ensures revenue is calculated using Contract Start Date and Contract End Date, which produces more accurate financial forecasts.

How to Build a Straight-Line Revenue Forecast

Follow these steps to create a financial forecast chart.

Step 1: Open the Chart Builder

  1. Go to Reports

  2. Open an existing Dashboard or create a new Dashboard

  3. Click + Add Chart

The Chart Builder will open.

Step 2: Select the Forecast Measure

In the Measures field, select:

Opp Amortized Revenue (V2 Forecast Only)

This measure spreads contract value across the Period of Performance.

Step 3: Select the Time Dimension

In the Time Dimension field, select:

Opp Revenue Month (V2 Forecast Only)

Step 4: Change the Chart Type

Set the Chart Type to:

Line Chart

This visualizes revenue trends over time.

If no data appears, ensure your opportunities have:

  • Estimated Contract Value

  • Contract Start Date

  • Contract End Date or Contract Term

Step 5: Add Filters (Optional but Recommended)

You can add filters to refine your forecast.

Example:

Filter by Pipeline Name to isolate a specific business unit or portfolio.

This allows you to forecast revenue for specific:

  • Pipelines

  • Agencies

  • Contract vehicles

  • Capture portfolios

Recommended Chart Builder Settings

For best results, use the following settings:

For (Time Range):
All Time

By (Grouping):
Month (recommended for financial forecasting)

Forecast Measures Reference

Amortized Revenue (V2)

Description:
Spreads the Estimated Contract Value evenly across the Period of Performance.

Use this for revenue planning and bookings visualization.

Weighted Amortized Revenue (V2)

Description:
Spreads revenue across the Period of Performance and applies Opportunity Win Probability (PWin).

Formula:

Estimated Revenue × Win Probability

Example:

Estimated Value: $1,000,000
Win Probability: 50%

Forecast Revenue: $500,000 distributed across contract duration

This provides a probability-weighted financial forecast.

Version 2 Forecast Logic

Version 2 calculates revenue using:

  • Contract Start Date
    and

  • Contract End Date

If Contract End Date is missing, NextStage uses:

Contract Start Date plus Contract Term

Example: Version 2 Forecast

Estimated Contract Value: $24,000
Contract Start Date: January 1, 2021
Contract End Date: December 31, 2021

Revenue distribution: $2,000 per month from January through December

Alternative Example Using Contract Term

Estimated Contract Value: $24,000
Contract Start Date: January 1, 2021
Contract Term: 12 months

Revenue distribution: $2,000 per month for 12 months

Legacy Forecast Logic (Version 1)

Legacy forecasting uses:

Award Date plus Contract Term

Example:

Estimated Contract Value: $12,000
Award Date: January 1, 2021
Contract Term: 12 months

Revenue distribution:

$1,000 per month for 12 months

Version 2 is more accurate because it uses actual Period of Performance dates.
