What's different about Nurture when students submit assessments compared Microsoft Teams Assessments or Google Classroom?

Students may be used to submitting homework and tasks on other platforms like Microsoft Teams Assessments or Google Classroom but Nurture goes a bit deeper, collecting more data and information from the student that helps the teacher create more effective feedback.

Each time a student submits a task on Nurture we collect the following information :

1. The students work can either be completed in Nurture, submitted as an attachment or a mix of both.

Students can complete their work directly in Nurture using the text box to submit their answers. All answers for all questions must go here. It is reccomended that students create their work on Nurture, but if they wish to create their answers on a separate document or event handwrite their answers and submit photos, they can add these as attachments instead.

If a student cannot submit their work on Nurture for any reason, they should submit their confidence score and add a personal comment for their teacher. This will count as a submission on Nurture and they can hand up their work in class to their teacher.

2. The students confidence level (Required).

Students are asked how confident they were completing the work for this task. This is a form of 'pre-reflection' for the student and will help the teacher get a better understanding of how the student felt they did on this assessment.

They must select either :

  • 😒 Low Confidence

  • πŸ™‚ Neutral Confidence

  • 😎 High Confidence.

πŸ’‘ Important

When a student submits an task on Nurture, they must submit their confidence score at a minimum for it to count as a submission on Nurture.

3. The students personal comment for the teacher. (Optional)

Students can leave a personal comment for their teacher to give some more context on how the student felt they did on this task. This is optional but it is reccomended that the student gives as much information to their teacher as possible. If the teacher has a good understanding of how the student felt they did on this assessment, they can create better personal feedback for that student.

To help create their personal comment, students could coonsider any of these prompts :

  • The most important thing I learned was...

  • The way I learned was...

  • What I found difficult was...

  • What I enjoyed the most was...

  • What helped me when something got tricky was...

  • Some things I did to help learning include...

  • Why do I think learning this skill / content is important...

  • What can I do now that I could not do last week/month/year...

At the beginning, students may not have much to say, but over time as they submit more tasks on Nurture, their ability to self-reflect on their work will improve. For example, here is the confidence and personal comment of Rebecca, a 13 year old student on her very first task on Nurture :

Student confidence and personal comment submitted on Nurture the first time a student used the app.

Fast forward 12 months and several tasks on Nurture later, this is the personal comment Rebecca submitted with her work :

Look at the difference in Rebecca's ability to self-reflect on her own work and communicate that to her teacher! Remember this is a now 14 year old student after using Nurture for one year.

πŸ’¬ Benefit

The personal comment is only visible to the teacher and it has proven to be an excellent way for students who may be shy to express their feelings and thoughts on their work privately to their teacher instead of infront of the whole class.

Students can subbmit their work with any option or any combination oof the following options, so for instance they can type part of their answers directly intoo Nurture and then handwrite another part of their answer and submit this as a photo if they wish.

2c. Option 3. Students can write their answers by hand, take photos of their work and then submit these photos as attachments. If they are using the Nurture app on a mobile device they can also take these photos directly in-app.

3. Once the student has added their work with one of the above options, to complete their submission they must click 'Submit work for this task' and on the next screen they must select their confidence level. Once they have selected their confidence level, click 'Next'

4. On the next screen the student can add a personal comment for the teacher. This step is optional, but reccomended! Once they are happy to proceed, click 'Confirm Submission'

5. The final step is to review their entire submission. This is one last chance to review their work and ensure they are happy with their confidence and personal comment. If the students wants to change anything, they can do so here. Once they are happy with their work, confidence level and personal comment, click 'Yes, Submit Assessment' and their task will be submitted πŸŽ‰.

You will now notice the status on the assessment page has changed from 'Not Started' to 'Submitted'. (You may need to close the assessment and reopen it to see this change)

Troubleshooting & F.A.Q

My students cannot access their task on Nurture.

If students are still unable to access their assessment, try troubleshooting these common issues first:

  • Check if the assessment is scheduled to publish at a later time. Students will only be able to access their assessment once it is published.

  • Check if your student has been added as a member or a guest of your Microsoft team and confim that they have access to that team and can log into Nurture. You can find out how to add students to a team in this article here.

If your students still cannot access their assessment, please contact us.
