The ≤3 miles/week rule

Your parked vehicle can drive up to 3 miles a week — for emergencies and short essential trips

Written by Magda Waskiel

The whole point of the One Car Challenge is parking your car for five weeks. But we know life happens — an unexpected appointment, a quick run for groceries, moving the car for street cleaning. So we built in a small allowance: up to 3 miles per week.

What "3 miles" means

It's the distance driven between your Sunday odometer reading and the next Sunday's reading. If your reading on Sunday is 53,420 miles, and the following Sunday it's 53,422 miles, you've driven 2 miles — and you'd qualify for that week's reward.

What happens if I go over

  • If you drive more than 3 miles in any given week, that week doesn't qualify and the $120 reward for that week is forfeited.

  • It doesn't end the pilot — you can still earn rewards for the following weeks.

  • Your running balance on the home screen will skip that week.

What counts as driving?

Anything that moves the odometer counts. That includes:

  • Driving the car yourself

  • Someone else driving it

  • Towing where the wheels turn

Tip: think weekly, not daily

You don't have to plan around a daily limit — you just need to stay under 3 miles total by next Sunday. So a 2-mile trip on Tuesday means staying under 1 mile for the rest of the week, but it's fine.
