You don’t want your dog to potty indoors. But your puppy won’t know this right away, so you need to reinforce the good behaviour at just the right time. The more you focus on getting this right in the first three months, the faster your puppy will be housetrained.

It is important to know exactly when to take your puppy out, and there are many critical times such as after waking up or playing. You will learn to read your puppies signs if you watch them closely! The age of your puppy will determine how often you should take them out — puppies can only physically hold their bladders for a certain amount of time depending on their age, so in the early days it is essential to take them out often to allow them to relieve themselves, and to reward them if they do it in the right place.

There are a few things you can do to prevent accidents overnight as well, such as removing the water bowl an hour after feeding your puppy at night.

You can find these tips and many more in the Housetraining lessons in our Puppy program.
