Trout Unlimited, USGS, WildMe, and onWater Fish are proud to announce TroutSpotter, a groundbreaking program that uses artificial intelligence to transform how anglers contribute to fisheries science and conservation.
While making a quick and easy journal entry in the onWater Fish app and submitting it to the TroutSpotter program, anglers help train the TroutSpotter machine-learning model, which identifies individual trout and collects critical data to advance research, conservation, and habitat protection. This effort not only strengthens app users' fishing knowledge by way of in-depth journal insights, but it also has the potential to fuel large-scale conservation science.
Submitting your trout photos to the TroutSpotter program is easy and free!
To get started you'll need the latest available version of the onWater Fish app.
Next, tap on the 'Journal' tab and tap 'Get Started':
After the introduction, you can opt-in to have all your eligible trout photos automatically submitted to TroutSpotter. You can also opt-in on individual entries if you'd like:
Whenever you have trout pictures you'd like to log and submit to TroutSpotter, head back to the Journal tab and tap the [+] icon:
Next, choose 'Take Picture' or 'Add Photo' to select a trout photo from your camera roll. Be sure that the picture is clear image of the entire left side of the body of the trout!
Once you've selected your trout photo, tap 'Species' to choose the species. If an eligible trout species is selected and you have not opted in for all entries to be submitted to TroutSpotter, an individual entry opt-in checkbox will appear. Try to fill in as many detail fields as you can before tapping 'Log Journal Entry' to finalize:
