Billing frequency – electricity and natural gas

Read about how your bill frequency is based on your energy type, the state you live in and the type of meter at your property.

Summary

  • Natural gas: Billing is quarterly (excluding Victoria, where it's every two months)

  • Electricity: Billing is quarterly if you have a standard meter (a meter that needs to be physically read to see your usage). If you have a smart meter (a digital meter that sends usage data to the distributor regularly), you may ask for and consent to monthly billing.

  • Electricity (smart meters only): Contact us to change to monthly billing or back to quarterly billing

Here's what determines how often you're billed

The state you live in, your energy type and your meter type determine how often you're billed.

Find your current billing cycle

Log in to My Account or the Origin app. In the Current bill period you'll see the date range, which indicates your current billing cycle. You can also view your next scheduled meter read date – your bill will arrive shortly after that date.

How to change to and from monthly billing (electricity smart meters only)

Contact us. We'll check the billing type your meter supports and then get your consent to make any changes.
