How net metering works

Net metering gives a two-way reading. So, we can capture the amount of solar energy you’re using, as well as what you’re putting back into the grid (your import vs export). You need a net meter to benefit from any of our solar feed-in tariffs. This way, we know exactly how much we owe you for the amount you’ve fed back into the grid.

Getting a net meter for your new solar system

After the installation of your solar system, the important next step is the set-up of your meter.

Customers with an existing smart meter will need their meter configured for net metering.

Customers with a basic meter will need a totally new meter, set up for solar.

For QLD and VIC customers with a new Origin solar system, upgrading to a net meter is part of the solar installation process. We'll submit the paperwork for your meter upgrade. Once requested, the upgrade usually happens within 15–20 business days.

In all other states, we’ll send you an application form to get your meter upgraded. Customers with a non-Origin solar system will need to contact their current electricity provider to request net metering.
