Why natural gas and electricity prices change
Many factors influence whether we increase or decrease our prices, including:
The movements in the wider energy market
Wholesale electricity or natural gas prices (the price Origin and other retailers pay to buy energy for our customers)
Environmental charges (costs Origin incur to source a certain amount of renewable energy, in line with obligations under the Renewable Energy Target and jurisdictional schemes)
Your distributor costs, also known as network costs
Our retail costs
You can find more information about the types of costs that make up an average electricity bill at our price change page.
Changes in these costs are also usually reflected in the Default Market Offer (DMO) and Victorian Default Offer (VDO) (i.e., the maximum price that retailers can charge on standard contracts, set by the government).
What do I need to do to get the new prices?
If you’re already an Origin customer, you don’t need to do anything. If your prices are changing, you’ll be notified via email or mail, price changes will automatically be applied, and you’ll see them on your next bill after 1 July. Find your current rates and charges on the first page of your bill or you can simply view your plan details in your account.
