To get electricity and natural gas connected to your new home, small business or building site, use our Origin Connect portal or submit a new connection request form.

New meter connection processes and timeframes vary from state-to-state. Find out more below or speak to our New Meter & Installations team on 1300 137 932. We're available Mon to Fri, 8am–5pm (AEST).

Get started by setting up an account

To get a new energy supply connected, we will need to set up an account. Where possible, we recommend putting the account in the property owner’s name, as it avoids paperwork and any interruption to supply during handover.

Whoever is paying needs to complete and sign a Request for a new energy account form (PDF 93 KB). If you have an existing multi-site agreement, you don’t need to complete this form.

How do I know the status of my installation?

If you’re using Origin Connect, you can easily keep track of all the jobs you’ve lodged – as well as the ones submitted by your electrician or plumber. And if you’re not using the portal, we’ll email or text you with updates along the way – like we did when we processed your application.

As your electricity retailer, we’re responsible for your electricity meter. We'll install – or arrange the installation of – new digital meters to take their place.

We’ll arrange to install your meter either:

  • on a date that we agree on – just give us a call so we can chat through this with you, or

  • within 6 full business days from the date we're informed that the connection service is complete.

This timeframe won’t apply if:

  • you haven’t provided the correct paperwork for the meter to be installed, or the paperwork is incomplete

  • the meter provider can’t safely access your site or meter box, or they’re prevented from entering the property

  • the site isn’t ready, and all work required at the premises isn't yet complete

  • turning off the power at your site to install the meter will impact the electricity supply of other properties.

Timeframes will begin when the above have been corrected and you’ve let us know.

For Victorians, there are different rules in place. Your local network distributor is responsible for your meter, and the time it takes to install a meter depends on which distributor you have.

From the time your distributor accepts the service order, allow up to 10 business days for new meter connections.

To get a natural gas service line and meter installed:

  1. To make sure that appropriate lines are laid, use our Gas connection appliance checklist (PDF 114 kB) to ensure that you have accurate appliance and megajoule (MJ) load information.

  2. Complete a new connection request through either:

  3. Once that’s received, we’ll get in touch with the distributor. There may be delays if the request is inaccurate or is missing information. When the site is clean and ready, the distributor will install the gas service line. This can take 6 to 8 weeks. Normally the gas meter will be fitted at the same time.

It's important to note: some jobs may incur extra costs. If the job needs a quote, we’ll be in touch to set up a time for the distributor to assess the work involved. This could take up to 20 business days for residential connections, and up to 65 business days for commercial connections. The quote will include a timeframe to complete the work. Work can’t start until the costs are paid in full.

Natural gas needs to be connected in two stages. First the service line needs to be installed, and then the meter can be installed.

A new service line is best requested when the build is at frame stage. Be as accurate as possible with your site lock-up date, as this determines when the distributor’s planner will inspect the site. If the inspector says the site is not clear and ready, you’ll have 10 business days before another visit.

Send through your natural gas meter request near the end of construction. You can also submit this at the same time as the service line request – which means the gas service line and meter installation will be done together.

To get a natural gas service line and meter installed in Victoria, there are a few things that need to happen.

To make sure your Service Connection Request (SCR) is done in time, please submit your new service line installation request 10 business days (not earlier or later) before the site is gas-ready.

Be as accurate as possible with the gas-ready date, as this will determine when the distributor’s planner will make a site inspection. The site needs to be clear and ready, including no scaffolding or temporary fencing. If the inspector visits the site and determines that it’s not clear and ready, you’ll have to wait another 10 business days before another site inspection.

Great news! The distributor can now send you SMS updates about new gas installations. Please make sure you include the number of the person in charge of the site when you submit your application.

Are the timeframes the same for a block of units, high rise development or multi-dwelling complex?

Generally no – these jobs usually take longer. This is because appointments are needed and there’s more than one property at the site.

I didn’t apply for electricity in time. What should I do?

You’ll need to get your electrical paperwork submitted as soon as you can, and make sure there’s clear access to the electricity meter box.

We can let the distributor know the connection’s urgent, but keep in mind they’re booked weeks in advance, so there’s no real way to fast track the process.

You’ll need to fill in the Gas Application form as soon as you can, and make sure the site is at lock-up, completely clean and free of debris. Then give us a call on 1300 137 932 to let us know when the handover is scheduled to happen.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

Connection timeframes are set by the distributor, and can depend on things like weather and the complexity of your job. But to avoid delays, it’s a good idea to submit your forms early in the construction process, and make sure they’re filled out correctly.

You should also check that the site is clear and ready for the distributor, and that the account is in the client’s name when you submit the initial new connection request form.
