Short answer

If you’re moving out or removing your energy supply (e.g. because of a demolition or a change to the type of energy you use), close your electricity, natural gas account (including centralised energy) or residential LPG account through My Account or the Origin app.

If you’re switching providers, contact us and we’ll let you know if there’s anything you need to do.

What you can do

Moving out or removing energy supply?

Close your electricity, natural gas or residential LPG account

Let us know a minimum of three business days before you move. If you:

  • were with us at your old address, close the account through My Account or the Origin app – or contact us to let us know when you’re moving out

  • weren’t with Origin, contact your previous energy company

If you’re moving out of an apartment building where we supplied:

If someone you know is staying behind

If a housemate is staying on after you move out, get them to move in online. That's the quickest way to switch the energy at the property from your name to theirs.

What happens next?

  • Electricity and natural gas: Closing your account schedules a disconnection in some states and a final meter read that’s used for your final bill. (We’ll tell you about any disconnection fees that may apply.) If we can easily access your meter, you don’t need to be home for the disconnection. Keep in mind that some meters can be disconnected from 7am on the day you choose, so it might be better to book your disconnection for the day after you move out

  • Residential LPG: Closing your LPG account for gas bottle exchanges or refills by hose cancels pending orders you may have. If you still need your final delivery, call 13 35 74 to let us know

  • Metered LPG or LPG Hot water: Closing your account schedules a final meter read that’s used for your final bill. We’ll tell you about any disconnection fees that may apply

Final bills

  • If you moved and didn’t let us know and someone else set up a new account at your old place, your previous energy company (Origin or another energy supplier) will send you a final bill

  • Got a surprise final bill though you’re not moving out? It can happen, particularly with similar addresses and unit numbers. Contact us and we’ll sort it out

Switching to another provider?

Electricity and natural gas customers

There’s no need to disconnect your energy supply. The other provider will let us know when your energy is transferred to them.

If you change your mind about switching to someone else, we’d love that. Our market electricity and natural gas plans have a cooling-off period of 10 business days, giving you the chance to reconnect with us or choose another Origin plan.

We don’t charge exit fees so you can change plans whenever you like.

LPG residential customers – gas bottles, refills by hose metered LPG and LPG hot water

You can close your account through My Account or the Origin app – or contact us to let us know.
