DNS Hosting vs. Domain Registration

This document will detail the differences between DNS Hosting and Domain Registration. As you migrate your new site to OTTO Sport, it's important to understand both of these terms.

Domain Registration:
This is the fundamental information about your domain (yourdomain.com, .net, .org, etc). There are two components.
​
• Registration Company: This is the company used to register the domain name itself. Popular choices include Network Solutions, GoDaddy, and Register.com.
• Registrant of Record: This is the name or names that appear on file as the registrants (owners) of a particular domain.
​
Each year, you or your organization pays an annual fee to register ownership of the domain name itself, typically $15-$30.

DNS Hosting:
​
The registration of your domain includes information about where your domain name is hosted and served. This is also known as Domain Servers or Name Servers ("nameservers"). Before you switch to OTTO Sport, this location will be your former host. In order to launch your site properly, these values need to be changed to OTTO Sport's servers.

Why This Is Important:
​
After your new site launches, OTTO Sport is officially hosting your website. However, OTTO Sport does not maintain the registration of the domain name. As the owner/registrant of the domain, your organization is responsible for keeping the official contact information up-to-date as well as paying an annual registration fee. OTTO Sport now provides services to automate the registration of your domain. At no additional charge, OTTO Sport can:

• Maintain the registration of your domain in your organization's name.
• Manage annual renewals so the domain name never expires.

With this service, your organization no longer needs to worry about anything regarding registration or hosting. OTTO Sport's experienced staff will ensure that your domain is properly registered in your organization's name and hosted securely.
