What is a Signal?
A ⭐ Signal means a customer matches one or more criteria that make them notable — beyond just their purchase history. OuterSignal evaluates every customer against a set of Signal Criteria and flags anyone who qualifies.
Your Signal Feed isn't just a list of orders — it's how you find the customers who could become your most valuable relationships.
Default Signal Criteria include:
Known investors, wealth managers, fund managers, or ultra high net-worth individuals
Executive Assistant to a highly-known public figure
Immediate family of a highly-known public figure or celebrity
Address has property value > $5M
Influencer (10K+ personal followers on any platform)
Widely-known figure with a Wikipedia page or other major extraordinary achievement
Renowned industry experts (e.g. best-selling authors, keynote speakers)
Senior executives at any company with social media >100K or $100M+ valuation
Any customer who matches one or more of these criteria will appear with a ⭐ in your Signal Feed.
Adding custom Signal Criteria for your brand
Every brand is different. A fitness brand might care about pro athletes. A B2B supplier might want to flag wholesale buyers. A beauty brand might want to surface makeup artists or estheticians.
If the default criteria don't cover someone important to your business, you can request custom Signal Criteria — just reach out to your CSM or email support@outersignal.com and we'll add them for you.
How to find your high-signal customers
Option 1 — Toggle on the Signal filter
The fastest way to see all your high-signal customers at once is to toggle on the ⭐ SIGNAL button at the top of your Signal Feed. This instantly filters your feed to show only customers who match one or more Signal Criteria.
Option 2 — Filter by a specific Signal Criteria
If you want to find customers who match a particular criteria — for example, all customers who are influencers with 10K+ followers — use the filter panel to select that specific criteria. This lets you narrow down to exactly the type of high-value customer you're looking for.
You can combine Signal Criteria filters with other attributes like LTV, order count, location, or persona to get even more targeted.
What to do once you've found them
Finding your high-signal customers is just the start. Here's what most brands do next:
1. Save them as a segment Once you've filtered your feed to the customers you care about, save the view as a segment so you can come back to it anytime — and use it as the basis for a Playbook.
2. Create a Playbook to take action automatically A Playbook lets OuterSignal act on your behalf every time a new customer enters your segment. Common Playbooks for high-signal customers include:
Slack alert — get a real-time notification the moment a VIP places an order so your team can act immediately
Klaviyo tag — automatically tag the customer in Klaviyo to trigger a dedicated VIP email flow
Shopify tag — tag the customer in Shopify to trigger special fulfillment, packaging, or a handwritten note
