How to pick the right gift variant and keep your free-gift offers running smoothly.

When you create a free-gift reward tier, you need to pick which product the customer gets when they hit the threshold. This article covers how to pick the right variant and how to handle stock issues.

Pick a specific variant, not just a product

Always pick a specific variant — not just the parent product.

If you select a parent product without specifying a variant, Shopify auto-picks one for you (usually the first variant in your variant list). That auto-pick may not be the variant you actually want to give away. The most common ways this goes wrong:

  • A multi-size product where you wanted to give the smallest size, but Shopify picks the largest by default.

  • A multi-color product where you wanted a neutral color, but Shopify picks a flashy one.

  • A product with a high-cost variant first in the list — you end up giving away your most expensive SKU.

Picking the variant explicitly removes the guesswork.

Keep the gift product in stock

If the gift variant runs out of stock, customers who hit the reward threshold won't be able to claim it. The single most common cause of free-gift problems we see is an out-of-stock gift variant.

A few practical tips to avoid this:

  • Use a gift product with deep stock. Pick something you reorder frequently or hold in large quantities — samples, branded merch, low-cost accessories.

  • Avoid seasonal or limited-edition products as gifts. If you can't easily restock it, it's a poor gift choice.

  • Monitor inventory. Set a low-stock alert in Shopify on the gift variant so you know when to swap it for a different product.

Changing the gift product

If your gift product is running low (or you just want to rotate to a new gift), you can swap it any time:

  1. Open Cart Editor → Rewards.

  2. Click the reward tier you want to update.

  3. Pick a new product variant in the gift picker.

  4. Save.

The change applies immediately — customers who hit the threshold after you save will get the new gift.

Tip

Pick gifts with high perceived value but low cost to you. Samples, branded items, and accessories work well. Avoid using your top-margin SKUs as free gifts — the AOV lift won't compensate for the COGS hit.
