Your sport comes first. In the Garage Strength training system, practice and competition are what your training is built to support, so the goal is to schedule your workouts in a way that leaves you fresh for practice.
That doesn't mean training takes a back seat. The work you put in at the gym builds the strength, speed, and durability that raise your ceiling as an athlete over the long term. The key is timing it so it fuels your performance on the field instead of taking away from it.
Train when it won't cost you at practice
The best time to train is when it won't leave you fatigued for your sport. In practice, that usually means one of three windows:
In the morning, well before an afternoon or evening practice.
After practice, once your sport-specific work for the day is done.
On days off from your sport, when you have the most energy to put toward training.
Training in these windows lets you get your critical work in while still arriving at practice fresh. Being fresh for practice matters more than being fresh for a workout, so when the two are close together, the workout is what should give.
If you have to choose
Sometimes your schedule forces a choice between a workout and a practice on the same day. When that happens, prioritize the practice. You can always fit your workout into another window, but your sport-specific work is what has the greatest impact on your performance.
