Understanding coupon cards

How coupon cards work

Coupon cards provide customers with specific discounts or offers that can be redeemed at your business.

Key characteristics:

  • Single-use or limited-use offers

  • Specific discount or promotional value

  • Clear redemption conditions

  • Status tracking (active or redeemed)

  • Optional link to ongoing loyalty programs

Common use cases:

  • New customer welcome offers

  • Promotional campaigns

  • Special event discounts

  • Partnership promotions

Linking coupons to loyalty programs

How linked cards work

Coupon cards can be connected to stamp or points cards, creating a customer acquisition funnel:

Customer journey:

  1. Customer installs promotional coupon card

  2. Customer redeems coupon for discount

  3. Customer automatically receives linked loyalty card

  4. Customer continues earning rewards on future visits

Benefits:

  • Convert one-time coupon users to loyal customers

  • Seamless transition from promotion to loyalty program

  • Track acquisition from coupon campaigns

  • Reduce friction in enrollment

Important behavior with linked cards

Installation tracking: When a coupon is linked to a stamp or points card:

  • Customer installation is recorded only under the coupon card

  • Customer will not appear as an installed user under the linked stamp or points card

  • This is normal system behavior—they're tracked through the coupon initially

Profile switching: After redemption:

  • Customer profile displays the linked loyalty card

  • All future activity tracked under the loyalty program

  • Original coupon redemption remains in history

Example:

  • Customer installs "20% off" coupon (linked to stamp card)

  • Installation recorded under coupon card, not stamp card

  • Customer redeems coupon

  • Profile now shows stamp card

  • Customer earns stamps on future visits

Frequently asked questions

Can a customer use a coupon more than once? Coupons are typically single-use. Once redeemed, the status changes to "Redeemed" and cannot be used again.

What happens to a coupon card after redemption? The card remains on the customer's phone but shows as "Redeemed." If linked to a loyalty card, their profile switches to display the loyalty program.

Can I undo a coupon redemption? Contact support for assistance with redemption corrections. Standard practice is that redemptions are final.

Why doesn't a customer appear under my stamp card when they installed a linked coupon? This is normal behavior. Installation is tracked under the coupon card. After redemption, they appear under the loyalty program for all future activity.

Can I link one coupon to multiple loyalty programs? Typically, a coupon links to one specific loyalty card (stamp or points). Check your card configuration for linking options.

What if a customer never redeems their coupon? Unredeemed coupons remain "Active" until expiration. Send reminder notifications to encourage redemption before expiration.

Can customers stack multiple coupons? This depends on your business rules. Typically, one coupon per transaction unless specified otherwise.

How do I track which campaign brought in the most customers? Use UTM tags when distributing coupons. Compare installation and redemption rates across different UTM sources.

Will expired coupons still show in customer profiles? Yes, expired coupons remain visible in the profile with their expiration date, but cannot be redeemed.

What's the best way to transition coupon users to loyalty members? Link coupons to loyalty cards. After redemption, send a welcome message explaining the loyalty program benefits and how to earn their first reward.
