In many places, there may be more than one way to be considered current on something. Take instrument currency for example. In the United States, FAA regulations require you to have six approaches and at least one hold in the last 6 months. However, you can alternatively have an instrument proficiency check (IPC), which then makes you "current" even if you don't have the required number of approaches.
LogTen can handle this quite nicely, to create the group and understand how it works, please read the instructions below. You can also use the link below to download the group directly to your device.
You can download the finished group in the link below. You can either click on the link or cut and paste it into a web browser to import it into your LogTen.
Please note that this will download to your iOS (iPhone/iPad) device as 3 independent groups and the "IPC + Instrument" group will still provide the same nested group functions
First, in the main menu of LogTen for Mac choose 'LogTen' then 'Preferences' then 'notes' section of and make sure the "IPC/ICC" checkbox is checked (we will, later, use this field to mark a flight as "Instrument Proficiency Check".
On your iPhone or iPad, open LogTen, select the “Logbook” tab and tap on any flight. Tap: “..." in the top right corner then "Configure Fields”, scroll down to "Notes", tap "Configure Section" and make sure that "IPC/ICC" is turned on.
When creating the Currency Group, and this is important, you will see a "Match any/all of the following criteria". The "any" selection means that they don't have to be on the SAME flight... if it was "all" then you would have to meet all the criteria on the same flight.
If we added the three criteria into the same Group, we would only be able to configure the group to either match all of the criteria (ie: it would look for flights that have 6 approaches and 1 hold and ICC), or match any of them (in this case, it would not be accurate as it would display as current when only one of the conditions are met).
For this reason, we will create three separate groups that will work in a "nested" fashion. One group will check for 6 approaches and one hold, and the other one for the IPC. The two will be nested into a "parent" group that will match either one, or the other (ie: either the 6 holds and 1 approach, or else the IPC)
To do this:
Create a new Currency Group by clicking the "+" button at the bottom left of the Flights tab
Name it (for example, "IPC")
Set the desired time period; in this case, 6 Calendar Months.
Set the criteria to "Notes -> IPC -> is -> [ticked]"
Drag this group into your main Instrument group
For your main (parent) Instrument currency group, leave the logic for Nested Groups to be "ANY", optionally rename it to something like "IPC + Instrument", then duplicate (control-click your Instrument group and select Duplicate) your main group, rename it to "Instrument" and move the duplicate into the "nested" location. This will result in the logic being (Group 1) or (Group 2) and show your currency at the top level as whichever group gives you more (longer) currency. You can see on the right what it looks like when finished:
This is what the groups would look like (the main Instrument group AND the copy of the Instrument group are the same)
