There are three different ways to enter a paper logbook into LogTen: These methods ensure you can seamlessly transition from paper to digital records while maintaining data integrity and accessibility.

Data Entry Service
Data Entry Services can convert your paper logbook or PDF file into an importable spreadsheet file. We do not offer data entry services ourselves, but we've partnered with AcuLog to provide professional paper to digital logbook transfer services for pilots worldwide (see website for current pricing information). They do a great job and are familiar with how LogTen works. When using such services, ensure the output file is in a compatible format such as .xlsx or .csv to enable smooth importing into LogTen.
Balance Forward Entry
This is the fastest way to enter all your previous data into LogTen. Airlines often require pilots to provide their last three months of logbook entries when applying for jobs, so we often recommend entering the last three pages of your most recent paper logbook line-by-line and the rest as a balance forward. Please see our separate article about Balance Forwards here. To implement the Balance Forward method: (1) Summarize totals from older logbook entries into one single Balance Forward entry per Aircraft Type; (2) Record flights logged beyond that date in detail line-by-line. This method combines efficiency with detailed recent records.
Manual Entry
This is the most work, but if you have the time it allows you to do a complete review of your data as you enter it electronically line by line. You can either enter data directly into LogTen, or you can enter it into a spreadsheet which can then be imported into LogTen. You could also do a combination of using Balance Forward entries initially while you enter your data line by line. Then you can replace the Balance Forwards with the entered data. For manual data entry, you can choose between direct input, where each logbook line is entered directly into LogTen, or spreadsheet preparation, creating an importable .xlsx or .csv file to be uploaded via LogTen desktop. These options allow flexibility based on the user's time and scope of work. Additionally, when preparing spreadsheets for import, ensure they adhere to LogTen’s required template to avoid compatibility issues. LogTen on Mac is best for importing spreadsheet data due to its robust import feature and compatibility. Manual entry paired with these advanced tools ensures a thorough review process, catering to both detailed and time-saving needs.
