Type

A rule can have one of two types: ZIP Codes or States/Provinces. Rules with type ZIP Codes will include a list of ZIP codes that the rule should apply to, whereas rules with type States/Provinces will include a list of states/provinces that the rule should apply to. Once a rule is created, its type cannot be changed.

Name

Rule names are strictly for merchant use and will never be visible to customers. We recommend choosing names that describe the purpose of the rule, such as, “Restrict [product name] in 23940”, “Only allow [collection name] in Michigan”, etc.

Country

Each rule targets the ZIP codes or states/provinces of a single country. To target multiple countries, create multiple rules.

Action

The action of a rule determines what should happen when a customer’s address and cart items correspond to that rule. There are three types of actions:

  • Restrict

    • Prevent customers from purchasing the products specified by the rule when their ZIP code or state/province is included in the rule.

  • Allow only

    • Only allow customers to purchase the products specified by the rule when their ZIP code or state/province is included in the rule. This also means that any customers whose ZIP code or state/province is not included in the rule will not be allowed to purchase the products specified by the rule.

  • Allow

    • Allow customers to purchase the products specified by the rule when their ZIP code or state/province is included in the rule. Unlike “Allow only”, this action has no effect on customers whose ZIP code or state/province is not included in the rule. See the Examples article for an explanation of when you might want to use this action.

Products

This field determines the products or collections that a rule applies to. Every rule must target at least one product or collection. There are three options for this field:

  • All products: The rule will apply to all products in the store.

  • Specific products: The rule will only apply to the products that you select.

  • Specific collections: The rule will only apply to the products in the collections that you select.

Priority Level

In most cases, the priority level of a group should be set to the default value Normal. However, sometimes there are cases where two rules with conflicting actions (e.g. Restrict and Allow) will target some of the same products and ZIP codes/provinces. In these cases, the rule with the highest priority level will be used to determine if a corresponding checkout should be allowed. See the Examples article for an explanation of when you might want to use a priority level other than Normal.

ZIP Codes

Note: this field is only present when the rule type is ZIP Codes.

This field is where you add all of the ZIP codes that you want the rule to apply to. See the Adding ZIP Codes to a Rule article for an explanation of the various methods you can use to add ZIP codes to a rule.

States/Provinces

Note: this field is only present when the rule type is States/Provinces.

This field is where you select all of the states/provinces that you want the rule to apply to. The list of state/province choices is determined by the country associated with the rule. For example, if the country field is set to United States, then the states/provinces dropdown will show all US states.

Status

A rule's status can be either Active or Draft. When the status of a rule is Draft, it is considered inactive and will have no effect on checkout. The Draft status is often used when saving a new rule that is not ready to go live or when you want to disable an existing rule.
