Set up column card height behavior

Learn how to customize column card height behavior on site pages

Written by Rodrigo

If you're using columns on your site pages, you can easily control the column card height behavior for the column items on your site pages.

This setting only applies if you're using card/split/overlay style on your page section.

Introduction

When you apply a card/split/overlay style to a collection of items in columns, each card can either have a unique height based on its content or be unified to match the height of the tallest card.

Tip — image misalignment vs. content height variation

Unified card heights is best when cards have varying amounts of text and you want them to line up visually. It forces all cards to the height of the tallest card, which can crop images when they have different aspect ratios.

If the misalignment is caused by images with different aspect ratios, a more targeted fix is to adjust the Aspect ratio in the section’s Design tab. This crops all images in the section to the same ratio (square 1:1, portrait 3:4, landscape 4:3, etc.) without forcing the overall card to a fixed height. See Customizing images and videos on your site pages for steps.

Setting up column card height behavior

You can set both global and per-section card behavior options on your account.

Setting up global behavior

Global behavior will be the default behavior Podia will use whenever a new section is added to your page.

Changing global options won't affect existing page sections using custom settings.

Here's how to set up global card behavior options across your site:

  1. From your home feed, click on your site name and select Admin from the dropdown menu.

  2. From the Admin dashboard, click Website in the sidebar menu.

  3. Select Edit site.

  4. Click on the Design menu at the top.

  5. Click on Structure from the left-hand menu.

  6. Under the Cards section, select the global Card collection height option you'd like to use for your site.

    • Unified card heights: cards will be unified to match the height of the tallest card

    • Unique card heights: each card will have a unique height based on its content

Setting up per-section behavior

You can also configure the card height behavior on a per-section basis. This will override the default settings you might have set up for your site.

This setting only applies if you're using the Card style on your page section.

Here's how to set up per-section card behavior:

  1. Navigate to the page section for which you want to set a card height behavior. Click on it to bring up its editing menu.

This option will just be available for columns/grid page sections.

  2. From the left-hand menu, navigate to the Design tab of the specific page section you're editing.

  3. If you haven't already, apply the Card/Split/Overlay Style option to your page section.

Controlling the column height behavior only applies if you're using the Card/Split/Overlay style on your page section.

  4. Once a supported style is selected, the Collection card height option will appear.

Click on it and select the option you'd like to use for this specific page section.

FAQs

I'm not seeing a "Card collection height" option... HELP!

If you're not seeing a "Card collection height" option, this means you're probably not using a Card/Split/Overlay style option for your page section.

Controlling the column height behavior only applies if you're using a Card/Split/Overlay style on your page section.

How do buttons interact with a unified card height setting?

When using the unified card height option, the tallest card will determine the height of all cards, but button heights will not be adjusted and may vary.

To make button heights consistent, you can add extra line spacing in the text area for individual items.

My images look cropped after enabling unified card heights — is there a better approach?

Yes. Unified card heights forces all cards to match the height of the tallest card, which clips images that don’t fill that height naturally.

If the issue is that your product images have different aspect ratios (e.g. one square, one portrait), try this instead: in the section’s Design tab, find the Aspect ratio setting and choose a consistent ratio that suits your images — such as portrait (3:4) or square (1:1). This will crop all images to the same shape across the section, giving a uniform look without affecting the rest of the card layout.

See Customizing images and videos on your site pages for full steps on the Aspect ratio setting.
