Understanding Custom Metrics

Create Custom Metrics to have more control over how your metrics are filtered and calculated.

If you'd like to have more control over how you metrics are filtered and calculated, you can create your own Custom Metrics within your Custom Reports dashboard. Custom Metrics allows you to use your data to create your own formulas for more personalized insights.

How to create a Custom Metric:

This video details how to set up your first Custom Metric step-by-step. In this example, we're creating a metric that calculates CAC for customers in the U.S.

  1. Open the Custom Metric Builder:

    • In the Polar app, click the "+" icon next to Custom Report on the left-hand menu, then select Custom Metric.

    • Alternatively, from the Key Indicators tab, click Edit Key Indicators to create a new Custom Metric.

    • You can also access it while building a custom report by selecting the "+" icon next to Custom Metrics.

  2. Add Your Metrics:

    • Once in the builder, choose the metrics you'd like to use.

    • You can either start writing your formula directly in the builder or use the right-hand sidebar to quickly find available metrics. You can search by name or browse using the drop-down menus.

  3. Build Your Formula:

    • Start creating your formula using operators like (+, -, x, /), numbers and additional metrics (including other Custom Metrics).

    • You can add as many data points as you'd like to a single Custom Metric.

    • Use parentheses to ensure your formula follows the correct order of operations.

    • Tip: You can apply filters or groups of filters directly to the metric to refine your data.

  4. Set Up Your Metric:

    • Choose how the metric should be displayed: as a number, percentage, currency, or duration.

      • These settings will only apply to this specific Custom Metric.

    • Add a clear name and description to help identify the metric, then save it.

  5. Put Your Custom Metric to Use:

    • Once saved, you can:

      • Add the metric to your Key Indicators page.

      • Use it in Custom Reports.

      • Schedule daily email reports featuring your Custom Metric.

In this example, we're creating a metric that will calculate total sales excluding shipping - so we're simply subtracting Shipping from Total Sales.

Managing Your Custom Metrics

You can quickly edit, duplicate, or delete your Custom Metrics by hovering over the three dots next to each metric in the Custom Metrics dropdown. This helps save time, especially when managing multiple Custom Metrics.

Edit a Custom Metric:

  1. Open the Custom Metric Library:

    • Click the "+" icon next to Custom Reports in the left-hand menu, then select See All next to Create Metric.

  2. Access the Custom Metrics:

    • Search for your saved metrics using the left hand side menu.

  3. Edit Your Custom Metric:

    • Select the Custom Metric you want to modify.

    • Save your changes

Duplicate a Custom Metric:

  1. Open the Custom Report Builder:

    • Click the "+" icon next to Custom Reports in the left-hand menu, then select Create Report.

  2. Access the Custom Metrics:

    • On the right-hand sidebar, click the dropdown menu under Custom Metrics to view your saved metrics.

  3. Duplicate Your Custom Metric:

    • Hover over the three dots next to the Custom Metric you want to modify.

    • From the options menu, select Duplicate to make a copy of your Custom Metric.
