⚠️ Important Update:
Shopify has removed session-based product metrics from their API. This affects Cart Sessions, Checkout Sessions, Purchase Sessions, View Sessions, and Quantity Added to Cart—which will now return empty values going forward. These metrics have been renamed in Polar with a "(Legacy Shopify Plus)" tag to make this clear.
Accessing Historical Data
If your Shopify account was connected to Polar before April 1st, 2025 you’ll still be able to access historical data for these now-legacy metrics. If you're analyzing performance before Shopify's API change, the legacy metrics will reflect what Shopify previously made available.
What’s the workaround?
To continue tracking sessions and on-site activity, we recommend switching to Polar Pixel session data. The Polar Pixel is our first-party tracking tool, which allows you to capture detailed session insights.
If you're not yet using the Pixel, reach out to our team to get started or check out our guide on setting it up: Understanding Polar Pixel
What Shopify site metrics are available in Polar?
The following metrics from Shopify are now marked as legacy and will no longer populate with new data::
View Sessions (Legacy Shopify Plus) - The sessions where a product was viewed.
Cart Sessions (Legacy Shopify Plus) - The sessions where a product was added to the cart.
Checkout Sessions (Legacy Shopify Plus) - The sessions where a product reached checkout.
Purchase Sessions (Legacy Shopify Plus) - The sessions where a product was purchased.
Quantity Added to Cart (Legacy Shopify Plus) - The total quantity added to Shopify carts.
This data is released by product - and it does not represent overall view sessions. If you're comparing the data between Shopify and Polar, you'll need to compare to the Shopify Product Insights page. You can access the Shopify Product Insights page under "Insights" within Shopify Analytics.
What breakdowns are available with these legacy metrics?
If you're analyzing past data, you can break it down by:
Processed Date
Product ID
Product Title
Product Type
Store
Timezone
Breakdowns are limited by what Shopify previously exposed in its API. While this data is no longer updating, these breakdowns remain useful for retrospective analysis.
The image below demonstrates how you can access breakdowns within a Custom Table.
Why don't I see data for the Shopify site metrics?
If your Shopify account was connected to Polar after April 1st, 2025 you will not be able to access legacy Shopify Sessions data.
If you account was connected before April 1st, 2025, the sessions data might not be available to you in the Shopify app if you are not on the Shopify Plus plan. Just a reminder: like all metrics in Polar, Shopify session data depends on what’s available through Shopify’s API.
