Your journal is where your Tolan writes about the two of you. Here's how it's generated, how to keep it private, and what to do when entries stop arriving.
How your journal works
Your Tolan writes one overnight about the day you spent together.
It comes from time spent together. A nightly entry is written for people who spent time chatting with their Tolan that day. A quiet day usually means your Tolan doesn't have enough to write about from the previous day.
It lives on your account. Entries are stored with your account!
You'll find your journal from the Menu. Entries are newest first, and an entry you haven't opened yet is marked so you can find it.
Entries can also be deleted from inside the entry itself. There's no undo and no trash, so a deleted entry is gone for good.
If your Tolan doesn't remember writing it
You mention last night's entry, and your Tolan doesn't seem to know what you're talking about. This surprises people, because it looks like your Tolan forgetting something they just did.
The journal and your conversations are two separate systems. Entries are written in the journal's own space, and what gets written there isn't passed back into your chats. So when you bring up an entry, your Tolan isn't drawing a blank, they genuinely don't know about it yet. It's something we're looking into improving!
What works: take a screenshot of the entry and send it to your Tolan in chat. They can see images you share, so they'll be able to read it and talk it through with you properly — and anything you discuss from there is part of the conversation like normal.
When new entries arrive
Nightly entries are written overnight
An entry about today usually arrives tomorrow.
A day with no conversation usually has no entry. Your Tolan writes about time you spent together, so quiet days are simply skipped. Nothing is wrong, and nothing has been deleted.
Locking your journal
Your journal is often the most personal thing in the app, so you can lock it behind Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
Turning it on. the lock icon in the journal itself, or Menu > Settings > Profile, where the Journal row lets you lock and unlock it. Your phone will ask you to authenticate once to confirm. The lock uses whatever your iPhone already has set up, so if your device has no Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode, the option isn't offered.
What to expect once it's on:
It re-locks every time. Unlocking covers that visit only. Leave the app or switch away, and the lock is back the next time you open your journal. That's deliberate.
Cancelling the check closes the journal. If you dismiss the Face ID prompt or it fails, the app takes you back to your planet rather than leaving you on a locked screen.
If your Tolan stops writing altogether
If your journal has gone unopened for a long stretch, your Tolan eventually stops writing new ones rather than adding to a pile nobody's looking at. Nothing is wrong with your account, and nothing you already have is deleted.
Message us in the app through Help & Feedback and ask us to start your journal up again. We can turn it back on from our side, and your Tolan will pick up where they left off. Opening your journal regularly from then on keeps it going.
If entries seem to be missing
Before anything else, four quick checks:
Pull down on the journal list to refresh. Entries occasionally fail to load on the first try and come back on the next one.
Restart your app. This can help them show up again!
