UTM tracking helps you understand how your emails and flows drive traffic and conversions by appending tracking codes to your links. PredictaMail gives you full control over your UTM parameters, so you can analyze campaign performance more effectively using tools like Google Analytics.

This guide explains what UTM parameters are, how they work in PredictaMail, and how to configure them for your account.

What is UTM Tracking?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to the end of URLs in your emails. These tags are picked up by analytics platforms—like Google Analytics—to track the source and performance of your traffic.

For example, a link like:

https://yourstore.com/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=campaign&utm_campaign=summer-sale

lets you know that the traffic came from an email campaign for the summer sale.

How UTM Tracking Works in PredictaMail

PredictaMail allows you to automatically add UTM parameters to all links in your emails and flows—or control them on a per-message basis.

Default UTM Parameters you can use:

  • utm_source

  • utm_medium

  • utm_campaign

  • utm_id

  • utm_term

You can choose values for each parameter using built-in options (e.g., “Campaign Name” or “Flow Name”), or set your own custom values.

Configure Global UTM Settings

To apply UTM tracking across all messages by default:

  1. Go to Settings > Attribution > UTM Parameters

  2. Use the toggles to enable/disable each default UTM parameter

  3. For each parameter, choose a value source (e.g., Campaign Name, Flow Name, or a fixed custom value)

  4. To create new tracking fields, click Add a custom UTM parameter and fill out the required details

  5. Turn on Automatically add UTM parameters to links to apply your selected settings across all future messages

  6. Click Save

Changes to global UTM settings will update all messages that rely on global tracking settings. Messages using custom UTM settings or with UTM tracking disabled won’t be affected until UTM tracking is re-enabled.

Control UTM Tracking Per Message

Sometimes, you may want to override global settings for specific campaigns or flows.

For Campaign Emails:

  • When setting up your campaign, toggle off “Include tracking parameters” if you don’t want to apply UTM tracking to that specific message.

For Flow Emails:

  • Open the flow message and uncheck the box for “Tracking” in the settings.

Alternatively, if you've turned off global UTM tracking, you can manually enable and configure UTM parameters for individual messages as needed.

⚠️ Messages with UTM tracking manually disabled or customized will not reflect global UTM updates unless you re-enable global settings within the message.

Creating Custom UTM Parameters

Need to track something specific? You can go beyond the standard UTM fields by adding custom parameters.

To do this:

  1. Go to Settings > Attribution > UTM Parameters

  2. Click Add a custom UTM parameter

  3. Enter the parameter name and value you want to use

  4. Save your changes

This is especially useful for A/B testing, affiliate tracking, or filtering traffic by audience type, campaign tier, or product category.
