How to Configure Inventory Settings for Stock Visibility and Pre-order Functionality

Updated this week

You can control how stock is displayed and when the pre-order button appears by choosing the right inventory setting in PreOrder Now.

This guide explains what each option does and how to use them correctly.

Overview of Inventory Options

There are two inventory options available, and each controls how your product behaves when stock changes:

Inventory Option 1

  • Does not display stock levels through the app

  • Does not show a stock warning in PreOrder Now

  • Your theme usually handles stock display already

👉 Use this option if you only want standard in-stock behavior without pre-orders.

Inventory Option 2

  • Automatically switches to a “Pre-order” button when a product is out of stock

  • Allows you to set how many units can be pre-ordered

  • Can display available pre-order stock to customers

👉 This is the option to use if you want to enable pre-orders.

Showing Available Stock

We only display stock in one specific case:

  • When using “Specify inventory available to pre-order”

If enabled:

  • Customers will see how many units are available for pre-order directly on the product page

  • This helps set expectations and reduce confusion

Pre-order Behavior

To enable automatic pre-orders:

  1. Set your inventory to Option 2

  2. Once the product reaches zero stock:

  • The Add to Cart button switches to Pre-order

  1. Customers can continue purchasing based on your configured pre-order limit

Important Notes About Stock Warning Settings

There are a couple of important limitations to be aware of:

🚫 Not Supported

  • Stock Warning (showing remaining stock) is not provided by the app under Option 1
→ Most themes already handle this natively

  • Prevent Customers from Ordering More than the Preorder Stock Available
→ This setting is currently not working as expected

✅ Recommended / Expected Behavior

  • The “Prevent overselling” behavior should apply when using:

  • Specify inventory available to pre-order

  1. The following setting should be used with Option 2:

  • Notify Customers When Part of Their Order Will Be on Pre-order

This helps customers clearly understand when part of their order isn’t immediately available.
