👎🏽 THE OLD METHOD - BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1, 2025
From 2012-2025, Product Customizer used an older method to power "customization charge pricing" for merchant users:
Upon installing Product Customizer a new product was added to your store called "customization charges". The product was priced at $0.01 and was used, in bulk to add up to the total customization charge attached to a product option.
Example: A $5.00 customization charge to add a monogram --> in this case, the $0.01 product was multiplied by 500, and 500 of them were added to the cart, which equaled $5.00.
This method was originally crafted to help stores "declutter" their product lists in their Shopify admin dashboard. Instead of having dozens of customization charge products, the merchant would have only one.
Challenges with the old method:
• Currency conflicts - for non-US currencies, it caused issues
• Customer confusion - someone ordering a product on your store might be confused by the quantity (500 in this case) of the customization charges item
• Page refreshes - auto refreshes had to be implemented to view the product charges properly in cart, which was not ideal for customer experience
The good news? Shopify has since improved many of the processes it uses on the back end, and released new widgets and tools that help developers (like us) solve common problems.
SO we are proud to release a new and better way to power your upcharge pricing and customization charges...
👍🏽 🤩 🚀
THE NEW METHOD - AFTER SEPTEMBER 1, 2025:
A single customization charge (upcharge) product will still be used to power this function on your store.
However, the monetary value of that product will change with each new upcharge price added to a product!
👋🏽 BYE BYE, $0.01 product!
On the back end, Product Customizer is now utilizing the up-to-2,000 possible variants on this single product to create every different upcharge amount.
HOW WILL IT LOOK & FUNCTION?
On the product page, both product options and the up-charge price amount will look the same as before ⬇️
When a product with an up-charge price is added into your cart by a customer, they will now always see a quantity of "1" with this customization charge product. Less customer confusion! ⬇️
Purchased product will show in cart in the same clean and clear way ⬇️
NOTE: if you create more than 2,000 upcharge prices in our app for your store, a 2nd customization charges product will be created and in use (you'll then see 2 or more customization charge products living on your store)
PS - Be sure to never delete or modify this "Customization charges" product from your Shopify store! (Other than changing the product image if you'd like to) - doing so will break the up-charge pricing functionality on your store.
