Breakout rooms are additional mini-rooms that a teacher can create during a group call. In this setup, students will see and hear each other only if they are in the same room. With breakout rooms, you can organize individual work or work in small groups during a group session.
Creating a Breakout Room
You can create breakout rooms during a call. To do this, click on the three dots, then select "Breakout Rooms."
In the window that appears, you can choose between two options:
Number of rooms (above the "Create" button, the system will calculate how many students will be assigned to each room)
Assignment type:
In manual assignment, you will decide which students go into each room.
In automatic assignment, the system will handle this for you.
Note! If you want to create breakout rooms multiple times during a session and use automatic assignment, the group compositions may vary each time.
If you selected the manual assignment type, a window with two tabs will appear:
In the "Rooms" tab, you need to form groups. To modify the group composition automatically created by the site, simply "drag and drop" student names into the desired groups.
In the "Settings" tab, you can determine:
- Whether students can switch between rooms.- If the rooms should automatically close after a set time. For example, if you give students 10 minutes to complete an assignment, set a timer for 10 minutes. Once that time is up, the rooms will close, and students will return to the main group call.
After selecting all the settings, you need to click the "Save" button.
Switching Between Breakout Rooms
After creating the rooms, the teacher can switch between them to monitor student activities. To do this, expand the list of all rooms and then select the one you want.
Configure Breakout Rooms
To change the settings of a specific room, expand the list of rooms and click the "Configure Rooms" button.
After that, a window will appear with two tabs:
In the "Rooms" tab, you can rename or delete any room, move a student from one room to another, and also manually close all rooms at once.
In the "Settings" tab, you can allow or prevent students from changing rooms, as well as set up or disable a timer that will close all rooms simultaneously when the time is up.
Closing Rooms
Rooms can be closed in different ways:
Automatically when the timer expires—in this case, the rooms will close simultaneously, and all students will automatically return to the main group call.
Manually, when the teacher decides to do so.
а) If you close only one room, the students in that room will return to the main room, while all other students will remain in their breakout rooms.
b) If you close all rooms, all students will return to the main group call (main room).
