With Shopify customer tags, you can restrict which customers see a Promolayer popup. Only customers who are logged into your store are eligible.
What are Shopify customer tags?
Customer tags are custom labels you assign to customers in your Shopify admin.
Common examples:
VIP or premium customers
Wholesale or B2B buyers
Loyalty tiers (Gold, Silver, Bronze)
Segments based on purchase history or product preferences
Requirements
Shopify stores only (not compatible with Wix, Ecwid, ColorMe, or WordPress)
Logged-in customers only — the popup will not show to visitors who are not signed into your store
Steps
Open the Rules tab of your display and go to the Only show to users who section.
Find the User tags option.
Toggle the User tags switch on to enable this rule.
In the tags field, select the Shopify customer tag you want to target. Use the dropdown to specify whether the tag should match or not match.
Save your display settings.
Use case examples
VIP-only offer: Set User tags to Equals and enter "VIP". The popup will only appear to logged-in customers with the VIP tag.
Wholesale pricing popup: Set User tags to Equals and enter "wholesale". Only logged-in wholesale customers will see the popup.
Exclude a customer segment: Set User tags to Does not equal to show the popup to everyone except customers with the specified tag.
Important notes
Login required: Only visitors who are logged into a customer account on your store will be targeted.
Exact match required: Tag names must match your Shopify customer tags exactly, including spelling and capitalization.
Multiple tags: When using Equals, the popup will show to customers who have any one of the selected tags.
Combining with other rules: The User tags rule can be combined with other targeting rules such as device type, geographic location, and cart total.
