How to create and start an A/B test

Step-by-step guide to creating an A/B test in Promolayer, adding variants, and starting the test to compare display performance.

This article applies to paid plan users only. A/B testing is not available on the Free plan.

You can create an A/B test to compare multiple display variations and automatically find which one performs best.

Steps

  1. Open the A/B test tab in the top navigation.

  2. Click New test.

  3. Enter a Test name and a Test description. Click Create.

  4. Your new test appears on the A/B test list in draft mode. Add variants using one of two methods:

    1. Add by create — design a new display from a template to use as a variant. The new variant is published (Live) by default.

    2. Add by copy — pick a display to duplicate from either your Displays list or from variants already used in any existing A/B test. The copy is created as a separate display titled "original title (Copy)" and is automatically linked as a variant of the test you are editing. You can rename it from the display editor like any other display.

  5. Repeat step 4 until you have at least 2 published variants (or 1 variant if you enable the control option — see A/B Test Control Variants: Overview).

  6. Click Edit test settings to configure page targeting, audience conditions, and the test schedule.

  7. Click Start test.

Note: The Start test button stays disabled until the minimum number of published variants is met.

Note: Variants added via Add by create are Live by default. Variants added via Add by copy are always created in Draft, no matter what state the source display was in — you must switch them to Live manually before the test can run.

Note: Each variant is an independent display and still has its own Draft/Live switch on the Displays tab. If a variant is left in Draft mode, it will never appear even while the A/B test is running. See Draft Mode / Live Mode: Overview.
