Boolean searches in Pulsar TRAC are a powerful way to refine and target your data analysis. However, there are some limitations and best practices to consider when managing and combining these searches.
Limitations of Combining Searches
Pulsar TRAC does not currently support combining multiple independent searches into a single analysis, however you can use SAGA to perform analysis on multiple searches at once.
Best practices for combining boolean queries
If you do not have access to SAGA and choose to combine several queries into a single search for your analysis needs. Follow these rules:
Group thematic keywords in parentheses: This ensures that related terms are kept neat. Without proper grouping, OR logic can unintentionally broaden your query beyond the intended scope.
Ensure there are no duplication of keywords: If you have an AND operator in your combined boolean query, ensure there isn't a duplication of keywords across parentheses once you've combined your searches. You want to avoid the following: (bird OR cat OR dog) AND (food OR snack OR cat). With 'cat' present in both parentheses, TRAC will return results with the keyword 'cat' only, which will broaden your results.
Ensure global operators are applied once at the end of the query:
Recommended query structure: ((Main Keywords) OR PINTEREST(...) OR TWITCH(...)) AND NOT (...) AND LOCATION (...) AND LANG (...) AND NOT RT
