What is Breed-Specific Health Testing?

Updated yesterday

Each breed has its own set of recommended genetic and health tests. PupUp only works with breeders who follow these guidelines, ensuring every puppy is as healthy as possible from the start.

Health tests range from medical screenings to vet evaluations that are conducted to identify potential genetic or inherited health issues that are common in a specific dog breed. These tests help ensure that breeding dogs are healthy and unlikely to pass on known genetic conditions to their offspring.

They are often a mix of physical examinations, X-Rays, and DNA tests that allows the breeder to make more informed breeding pairings to avoid passing on hereditary diseases.

Examples include hip dysplasia evaluations, eye exams, or genetic tests for breed-specific conditions like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). Responsible breeders perform these tests to promote the health and well-being of their dogs and future puppies.
