What is Breed-Specific Health Testing?

Updated over 4 months ago

Breed-specific health testing refers to medical screenings and evaluations conducted to identify potential genetic or inherited health issues that are common in a specific dog breed. These tests help ensure that breeding dogs are healthy and unlikely to pass on known genetic conditions to their offspring.

They are often a mix of physical examinations, X-Rays, and DNA tests that allows the breeder to make more informed breeding pairings to avoid passing on hereditary diseases.

Examples include hip dysplasia evaluations, eye exams, or genetic tests for breed-specific conditions like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). Responsible breeders perform these tests to promote the health and well-being of their dogs and future puppies.
