Discontinuation PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP protocols

PureVPN is discontinuing support for three protocols, namely PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP.

Updated over a month ago

PureVPN has discontinued offering support for PPTP, L2TP and SSTP protocols on the majority of VPN locations.

However, at the popular request of our users, we will continue to support the following locations for users to connect using PPTP, L2TP and SSTP protocols:

  • Australia: Sydney

  • Germany

  • Netherlands

  • United Kingdom: London

  • United States: Texas, California, Florida, New York, Washington DC and Illinois.

The discontinuation of the said protocols is in three phases. Phase one will initiate on June 15th, phase two on June 28th and phase three on 2nd July.

Why did we decide to discontinue PPTP, L2TP and SSTP protocols?

The decision is taken because these protocols are becoming obsolete and are not subjected to independent audits, whereas the newer protocols have better encryption, reliability and speed.

We are aware that many of our users connect to our service using these protocols, but as their VPN service provider that they rely on to keep their internet encrypted and their online life secured, it is upon us to take tough measures.

What protocols are we supporting?

PureVPN will support IKEv2, IPSec and OpenVPN (TCP & UDP) as primary protocols on all vpn locations. While PPTP, L2TP and SSTP will be available in Australia, Germany, Netherlands, UK (London only) and USA (selected cities)

How does the discontinuation of PPTP, L2TP and SSTP impact your PureVPN experience?

For New PureVPN App Users:

Nothing. The new PureVPN app users can continue to use the service without any disruption as our ‘Automatic Protocol Selection’ feature connects you to the best VPN protocol.

For Old PureVPN App Users:

The old PureVPN app users will face auto disconnection if they are connected via PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP protocols. To re-connect, change your protocol to IKEv2, IPSec, or OpenVPN.

For Dedicated IP users:

The discontinuation of PPTP, L2TP and SSTP protocols will have no impact on our Dedicated IP add-on users.

For users who connect PureVPN through routers and internet-enabled devices:

Users connected to any of the locations being discontinued for PPTP, L2TP and SSTP protocols support will face auto-disconnection. To re-connect, they can either;

  • Connect to one of the five locations that still support PPTP. L2TP and SSTP protocols. You can use the following DNS hostnames to re-connect:
