NovoCare® Sharps Disposal Support: Patient Guidance Document

Program Overview

Novo Nordisk offers patients a free sharps disposal container or medication disposal system through its NovoCare® program, supporting safe and compliant disposal of used injection materials (e.g., insulin pens, syringes, and needles). This helps reduce environmental risk and protects household members and sanitation workers.


Eligibility Requirements

To request a free sharps container or medication disposal system, you must:

  • Be a current patient using a Novo Nordisk injectable medication, such as:

    • Levemir®

    • Tresiba®

    • NovoLog®

    • Fiasp®

    • Ozempic®

    • Wegovy®

    • Saxenda®

    • Victoza®

    • Xultophy®

  • Reside in the United States or U.S. territories

  • Be 18 years or older (or have a legal guardian submit the request)


How to Request a Free Sharps Container

Step 1: Visit NovoCare

Go to the official NovoCare website:

Step 2: Navigate to the Product Support Section

On the homepage:

  • Click “Patient Support” or look for “Medication Disposal” or “Sharps Disposal Options”

  • Select the program titled “Free Sharps Container” or “Safe Needle Disposal”

Step 3: Complete the Request Form

You will be asked to:

  • Confirm the Novo Nordisk product you are using (such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, etc.)

  • Provide basic personal and shipping information

  • Agree to terms of use and verify you are a U.S. resident

Note: No prescription or physician verification is typically required for the sharps container.

Step 4: Submit the Request

Once submitted, Novo Nordisk will process your request and mail the container to the address provided, typically within 2 to 4 weeks.


Additional Disposal Options

Novo Nordisk may also offer:

  • At-home drug deactivation pouches (for safe disposal of unused medication)

  • Education on local disposal regulations and drop-off sites via partnerships with SafeNeedleDisposal.org

You may be redirected to authorized third-party partners that manage logistics, including PureWay or other certified medical waste handlers.

Important Reminders

  • Only one container may be shipped per request, and repeat requests may require revalidation of medication use.

  • Always use the provided container for disposing of pen needles, syringes, or lancets.

  • Do not throw sharps into household trash or recycling bins.
