Sharps Mail Back System

Updated this week

With over 200,000 serviced locations nationwide, we provide simple, scalable, and cost-effective waste disposal services for businesses and healthcare facilities of all sizes. According to OSHA standards, sharps are contaminated objects capable of penetrating human or animal skin. They are classified as regulated medical waste, also known as biohazardous waste, generated during the course of patient care. The most common types of sharps found in healthcare settings include:

  • Syringes

  • Needles

  • Scalpel Blades

  • Razor Blades

  • Auto-injectors

  • Hypodermic needles

  • Cap needles

Sharps disposal systems are designed exclusively for medical sharps. Other items should never be placed in these containers. Proper training is essential to prevent errors, and annual training is recommended to ensure the facility disposes of waste correctly.

Note: Items that should not be placed in sharps containers include:

  • Medications or any pharmaceuticals

  • Inhalers or aerosols

  • Unregulated municipal solid waste (regular trash)

  • Liquids of any kind (including blood)

  • Hazardous chemicals

  • Batteries

Sharps Disposal, Treatment, and Recycling Methods

PureWay introduces an innovative disposal method that provides a genuine recycling option for medical waste and sharps containers. Traditional methods, such as autoclaving, incineration, chemical treatment, and microwaving, are commonly used.

These processes transform previously contaminated waste into decontaminated solid material. However, most medical waste companies simply send this decontaminated waste to landfills.

Medical Waste Recycling Process Works

Here is a detailed look at the step-by-step process through which medical waste is safely collected, processed, and recycled into reusable materials.

  1. Approved facilities pick up medical waste using your preferred service and deliver it to a specialized facility equipped to handle medical waste safely.

  2. The medical waste is processed through a decontamination machine to ensure it is safe for further handling.

  3. Waste is sorted to separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable ones. The proportion of recyclable materials varies by cycle, typically ranging from 60% to 95% of the total volume.

  4. The recyclable portion is sent to a plastic recycling facility, where it is broken down and repurposed as resin or other byproducts.
