Most connection problems come down to one of four things: old login details, a server that's still restarting, a block on your own network, or a problem on the server. This page helps you find which one in a few minutes. If you're still stuck, our team is on 24/7 and can usually see the cause straight away.
Step 1: Use the login details from your dashboard
Old saved details are the most common cause, especially after a password change, reinstall or migration.
IP address: copy it fresh from your QuantVPS dashboard. A migration or reinstall can give your server a new IP address.
Username: usually Administrator on Windows, root on Linux.
Password: copy it from the dashboard, with no extra spaces at the start or end.
Changed the password inside Windows? If you changed the Windows password yourself inside Windows, use that new password. The dashboard may still show the original password. Changes made inside Windows do not sync back to the dashboard.
Just restarted? Give the server 5 to 10 minutes to start up before trying again.
Step 2: Check the server is running
Start with the Overview for your server in the QuantVPS dashboard. It shows the server's health and whether Remote Desktop (RDP) is reachable.
Then open the console in your QuantVPS dashboard. It shows the server's screen without Remote Desktop: how to use the console.
You see the Windows login screen or desktop: the server is running, so the problem is the connection. Go to Step 3.
Windows is updating or restarting: wait for it to finish, then connect again.
The screen is black, frozen or shows an error: reboot the server from the dashboard in Control Panel > Server Controls, wait 5 to 10 minutes, and try again. If it still won't come up, go to Step 4.
Step 3: Rule out your own network
Try another network. Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone, install the Windows App, and connect using mobile data. If that works, the block is on your usual network.
Turn off any VPN and try again.
Work, hotel and public Wi-Fi often block Remote Desktop (port 3389). Use a home connection or your phone's hotspot, or change the Remote Desktop port.
Firewall or antivirus on your computer can block Remote Desktop. Add an exception for your Remote Desktop app.
Step 4: Contact support with these details
Open a support ticket (in your dashboard, go to Support > Open Support Ticket) and include:
the exact error message or code (a screenshot helps);
what the dashboard console showed in Step 2;
whether it works on another network.
We can check the server's status and logs on our side, and in most cases fix it without touching your data.
Please don't reinstall the server to fix a connection problem. A reinstall erases everything on the VPS and can't be undone. Talk to us first.
Common error: 0x204
Error 0x204 means Remote Desktop couldn't reach the server at all. Check that the server is running (Step 2), then rule out your network (Step 3). If both look fine, contact us: it may be maintenance or a problem on our side.
