Understanding the “Stopped” Server Status

Troubleshooting when your VPS shows as stopped.

Updated over a week ago

If you’re seeing a “Stopped” status in your dashboard, it means your server is currently offline or not responding. This can happen for a few different reasons depending on whether you’re a new or existing user. Here’s how to figure out what’s going on and what to do next.

Just Signed Up?

If you recently purchased a VPS and see the “Stopped” status during your first login, your server may still be provisioning. Some configurations take a few extra minutes to come online, especially if manual deployment is involved.

What to do:

Please allow 1–2 hours, then refresh your dashboard. In most cases, your VPS will automatically power on and become accessible. If it’s still showing as “Stopped” after that window, please open a ticket so we can assist promptly.

Existing User?

If your VPS was previously active and is now showing as “Stopped,” this typically means the server crashed or was shut down unexpectedly. This is often related to high CPU usage or instability caused by resource-intensive applications.

First, check for any known issues:

If you’re not seeing any alerts or outage communications, your VPS issue is isolated and not related to a platform-wide problem. All other systems are operational and healthy.

Why Do VPS Crashes Happen?

VPS crashes can occur due to extended periods of high resource utilization — especially CPU. For example:

  • Applications like TradeStation, StrategyQuant X or multi-platform algo stacks can push CPU usage to 100%.

  • Many of our power users start on VPS Ultra but later upgrade to a Dedicated Server for added stability and guaranteed resource allocation.

This is not a flaw with QuantVPS — it’s simply the nature of running resource-heavy workloads on a virtualized environment. Virtual machines can be fragile, so pushing the limits can result in system instability.

What to Do

1. Manually Power On Your VPS

  • Go to your QuantVPS Dashboard

  • Click on your VPS

  • Click the “Power On” button

In many cases, this will bring your VPS back online immediately.

2. Check CPU & Memory Usage

If your VPS is frequently pushed to its limit, a crash may repeat unless adjustments are made.

  • Navigate to the Resource Monitor in your VPS

  • Review your CPU and RAM utilization

If you’re consistently maxing out available resources, consider upgrading to a larger plan or dedicated server.
