Set up Detect+ monitoring and alerts

See your VPS's health in Detect+ and get an email when your VPS goes offline, loses its connection or restarts.

QuantVPS Detect+ (beta) watches your trading platform, your data feed and broker connections, and your VPS. It alerts you when your platform or data feed stops. Detect+ is free on every plan during the beta.

New Windows VPSs come with Detect+ installed. You only open it and turn on the alerts you want. Detect+ also works on dedicated servers.

Before You Start

  • Sign in to your QuantVPS dashboard.

  • Your VPS must be active. Detect+ does not show while a VPS is being set up, upgrading, paused or overdue.

  • Alert emails go to the email address on your account.

Step 1: Open Detect+

  1. If you have more than one VPS: in the top bar, click Selected server and choose the VPS.

  2. In the sidebar on the left, click Detect+.

The Selected server menu open in the top bar of the dashboard, listing the VPS to choose.
The QuantVPS dashboard sidebar with Detect+ highlighted, below Overview and Control Panel.

On a phone, tap Detect+ in the tab bar at the bottom of the screen.

The Detect+ page on a phone, with Detect+ highlighted in the tab bar at the bottom of the screen.

You see the Detect+ page: "Monitoring, alerts and support access for" your VPS's name.

Note: If the page says Install Detect+ on your VPS instead, Detect+ has not reported from this VPS yet. Follow "If the Detect+ Page Asks You to Install It" below.

Step 2: Check Your VPS's Health

Detect+ opens on Overview.

The Detect+ page on Overview: the findings list, and tiles for CPU, memory, disk, internet latency, Remote Desktop and Windows uptime.
  • The tiles show CPU, Memory, Disk C: free, Internet latency, Remote Desktop and Windows uptime.

  • Status checks below show the rest, such as Windows Update, failed sign-ins, the speed test, backups and your trading platforms.

  • The list at the top shows what needs a look, worst first. When all is well, it says No problems found.

  • Detect+ reports every 5 minutes. The Live line shows when the next report is due.

  • To see a longer time, click a range on the right, from 30m to 60d.

  • To save every section as a PDF, click the download button (Download snapshot).

Network and Uptime and logs, below Overview, show more detail. On a phone, these pages are a row of buttons above the tiles: swipe the row to see them all.

Step 3: Turn On the Recommended Alerts

Every alert is off until you turn it on. Start with the two recommended alerts: VPS connection and Restart.

  1. On the Detect+ page, click Settings, then Alerts. The line beside Alerts shows where emails go.

  2. Under Connection and uptime, turn on VPS connection and Restart.

  3. To also hear when your VPS is off or does not answer, turn on VPS offline.

  4. Click Save at the bottom of the screen, then confirm.

The Detect+ page list with Settings highlighted and Alerts open below it.
The Alerts panel with VPS connection and Restart turned on, the other alerts turned off, and the Save bar.

A message confirms it, for example "2 alert changes saved." To undo changes you have not saved, click Discard.

Step 4 (Optional): Choose What Each Alert Watches

When an alert is on, its setting shows below it. Click a choice, then click Save.

  • VPS offline emails you when your VPS is off or does not answer from any of our monitoring locations for 20 minutes, and it has sent no reports for 30 minutes. That is long enough for Windows updates to finish. It has no setting.

  • VPS connection emails you when your VPS cannot reach the internet for 10 minutes while it still sends its reports. Watch: The VPS (the default), or VPS and trading servers to also hear when it cannot reach your brokers or data feeds.

  • Restart emails you when Windows restarted. Alert on: Unexpected restarts (the default: a crash, blue screen or power loss), Unexpected and automatic (also restarts Windows starts on its own, such as for updates), or Every restart.

  • Trading platform crash emails you when a trading platform, such as NinjaTrader, MetaTrader or Quantower, crashed. Alert on: Crashes (the default), or Crashes and freezes.

  • High CPU emails you when CPU use stays above the limit for 10 minutes. Above: 80%, 90% (the default) or 95%.

  • High memory emails you when memory in use stays above the limit for 10 minutes. Above: 85%, 90% (the default) or 95%.

  • Low disk space emails you when free space on drive C: falls below the limit. Below: 5 GB, 10 GB (the default) or 20 GB.

Note: VPS offline does not alert when you turn off, restart or reinstall the VPS in the dashboard, during maintenance, or during a host outage (that has its own email). We watch the host, the network and Remote Desktop around the clock either way.

Other Ways to Turn On Alerts

From the Sidebar

While no alert is on, the sidebar shows Turn on VPS alerts.

The sidebar shortcut
  1. In the sidebar, click Turn on VPS alerts.

  2. Under 1 Choose VPSs, check that your VPS is ticked. A VPS with Detect+ shows Monitored.

  3. Under 2 Choose alerts, VPS connection and Restart are ticked as Recommended. VPS offline is offered but not ticked. Tick more if you want them.

  4. Click Turn on 2 alerts (the count changes with what you tick).

The VPS alerts window: step 1 Choose VPSs with the VPS ticked and Monitored, step 2 Choose alerts with VPS connection and Restart ticked as Recommended, VPS offline not ticked, and the Turn on 2 alerts button.

A message confirms it, for example "2 alerts are on for 1 VPS." The shortcut goes away once an alert is on. To hide it for good without turning on alerts, click its ×.

With Search

  1. Press ⌘K on a Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows. Or, in the top bar, click Search.

  2. Type turn on alerts.

  3. Choose Turn on Detect+ alerts (Detect+ · Settings · Alerts).

The dashboard search with

The dashboard opens Detect+ › Settings › Alerts. Turn on the alerts you want and click Save.

In the Connect Guide

The connect guide ends with an optional Detect+ step. Once Detect+ has reported and no alert is on, its Turn on recommended alerts button turns on VPS connection and Restart for that VPS.

What Happens When an Alert Fires

You get one email when a problem starts.

  • The subject says what happened and which VPS, for example "Your VPS restarted: Trading VPS (VPS Pro+, Chicago, 203.0.113.24)".

  • The email says when it was detected, what happened and what to do next. Its Server table names the VPS.

  • Open your dashboard opens Detect+. If you have more than one VPS, check that the top bar shows the VPS the email names.

  • To ask for help, reply to the email.

  • To keep alerts out of spam, add noreply@updates.quantvps.com to your contacts.

Example VPS offline alert email: Your VPS is offline, when it was detected, what to do next, the Open your dashboard button and the Server table

A problem that lasts, such as high CPU, sends one email. It does not send one every 5 minutes. The alert closes when the problem clears. When a VPS that went offline answers again, you get a second email saying it is connected again and how long it was offline.

You get at most 30 alert emails a day for each VPS. If one alert opens 3 times in 3 hours, its emails pause for 3 hours, and that email tells you.

To see every alert, open Detect+ › Settings › Alerts and scroll to Past alerts. It lists the alerts of the last 90 days: when, which alert, what happened, its status and whether it was emailed.

  • Event: a restart or crash.

  • Ongoing ("Open for …"): the problem has not cleared yet.

  • Resolved ("Lasted …"): the problem cleared.

If the Detect+ Page Asks You to Install It

New Windows VPSs come with Detect+ installed. On an older VPS or an Ubuntu VPS, the Detect+ page shows Install Detect+ on your VPS until the first report.

On Windows

  1. On the Detect+ page, click Copy install link. The link is your own install page for this VPS. It works for 14 days.

  2. On your computer, connect to your VPS with Remote Desktop. The password is on the Control Panel.

  3. On your VPS, open the web browser. Paste the link into the address bar and press Enter.

  4. Follow the page. It shows you each click.

Need help? On the Detect+ page, open Help and other ways to install.

On Ubuntu

  1. On the Detect+ page, click Copy install command.

  2. On your computer, open a terminal and connect to your VPS with the ssh line the page shows.

  3. On your VPS, paste the command and press Enter.

  4. When it is done, the last line says "QuantVPS agent … installed and running".

Need help? Open Help with SSH and the install.

The Detect+ page opens Detect+ by itself about 5 minutes after the install.

Troubleshooting

I don't see Detect+ in the sidebar.

In the top bar, check Selected server. Choose a VPS, not a prop firm subscription. Detect+ does not show while a VPS is being set up, upgrading, paused, overdue or canceled.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC".

Click More info, then click Run anyway.

The browser warns about the file.

Open the browser's downloads list, click the file's menu, then click Keep.

The install window says "Install failed".

Send a screenshot of it in your support chat.

I prefer PowerShell.

On your VPS, right-click the Start button and click Terminal (Admin). Copy the line under Help and other ways to install, paste it and press Enter.

Ubuntu: SSH asks "Are you sure you want to continue connecting?"

Type yes and press Enter. Then type your VPS password and press Enter. The terminal hides the password as you type.

Ubuntu: "curl: (22) The requested URL returned error: 403".

The command ran on your own computer. Connect to your VPS first, then paste it again.

The page still says "Waiting for the first report".

The page opens Detect+ about 5 minutes after the install. If it still waits after that, contact support.

I turned on an alert but got no email.

  1. Open Detect+ › Settings › Alerts and check that the alert is on and saved.

  2. Check the address beside Alerts ("Emails go to …").

  3. Look in your spam or junk folder.

  4. In Past alerts, the Email column says why an alert was not emailed, for example "No email address on the account", "Daily limit of 30 alert emails reached", "Paused: it repeated 3 times in 3 hours" or "The email could not be sent".

My VPS was off and I got no alert.

Check that VPS offline is turned on. It waits 20 minutes, so a short restart never alerts. It also does not alert when you turned the VPS off, restarted or reinstalled it in the dashboard, during maintenance, or during a host outage (that has its own email).

I restarted my VPS and got no alert.

That is expected. Unexpected restarts never alerts for a restart you start in Windows or the dashboard. To get an email for every restart, set Restart to Every restart.

I get too many emails.

Raise the limit, for example set High CPU to 95%. Or turn the alert off. An alert that repeats 3 times in 3 hours pauses its emails for 3 hours by itself.

My dashboard says "Detect+ not reporting", or Detect+ says "Detect+ stopped reporting".

Detect+ has not sent a report for more than 15 minutes. The VPS may be off or offline. In the Control Panel, check that your VPS is on. If the message stays, contact support.

Your Data and Support

Detect+ never sees your files, your screen, your passwords or what you type. It records the programs that are running and their file paths, network connections and latency, CPU, memory and disk history, and Windows event logs. Support sees your Detect+ data only after you allow it, in Detect+ › Settings › Support access, or with Share until I stop at the top of the Detect+ page.
