How do I change the vehicle on my policy?

Written by Ticker

To change the vehicle on your policy, open your RAC Black Box app and tap the Make a change tile. Select Change vehicle and you’ll go through the same steps as when you bought your policy.

You’ll get a quote for changing your vehicle (which saves automatically in case you want to come back later), then you can pay for your change, or add it to your instalments if you pay monthly.

There's no admin fee if you make a change to your policy yourself in the app.

You can only change the vehicle on your policy from a car to a car, not to a van or other larger vehicle.

Your telematics device if you change your vehicle

  • If you’ve got a stick-on device, we'll send you a new adhesive ring to make sure it sticks well

  • Take your stick-on device off your old windscreen, or unplug your plug-in device

  • Stick your device to your new windscreen with the new adhesive ring, or plug your device into your new vehicle – we’ll send you instructions on where it will go in your new car

You don't have to go through setting up the device again if you change your vehicle; just check the app is updating as normal.

Your car on the Motor Insurance Database

The Motor Insurance Database is where every insured vehicle appears. Police use it when they scan reg numbers, to check if a vehicle has insurance.

If you're asked about your insurance by police

Up until the time you've chosen to switch your vehicle on the policy, your old vehicle is still insured. However, the Motor Insurance Database will already show your new vehicle.

Your insurance documents in the app will show that you're insured on your old vehicle until your chosen time to switch. The police will understand the situation, but can start a chat with us if they need further information.
