Changing your number plate in the app
If you need to change your car's registration number on your insurance policy - for instance, if you’ve switched to a private or personalised number plate - this guide will walk you through the process.
Steps for changing your number plate in the app
Your RAC Black Box app has a simple tool for updating your registration plate, with no fee. It should be a very easy process, but start a chat for help if you need us.
Update DVLA records: before making your change in the app, make your new plate is registered with the DVLA and you’ve had confirmation that the change has been processed.
Log into the RAC Black Box app
Go to to the 'Make a change' area on your policy page:
Tap the 'Make a Change' button from your app dashboard
Tap 'Change number plate' and follow the steps
Tell us the new information:
Your new registration number
The date and time you want the change to happen
Confirm your policy details are all up-to-date
Review changes and confirm: make sure all the details are correct
Once you've submitted your change, it will start from the date you chose and your updated documents will appear in the app.
Costs and fees
We don't charge any fees to update your registration plate and it won't affect your overall insurance premium either.
