Connected insurance (also known as telematics or black box insurance) helps good drivers save money on their insurance just by driving carefully.
You fit a small, self-install device in your vehicle to collect data on either how you drive or how much you drive (if you're a pay-per-mile customer).
How RAC Black Box insurance works for new drivers
Your initial insurance quote works much like a traditional policy: you choose to pay either monthly or annually, based on all your personal details. We trust that you're a good driver because you're happy to share how you drive, so we may be cheaper than other quotes.
How you drive over the year then lets us reward you at renewal if you've driven well.
You'll get the telematics device through the post within a few days of your policy starting. You install the device in your car, following the instructions we'll give you.
After you've installed your device, you'll start sending data on how you drive - for example, your speed and smoothness.
You'll then see feedback in your RAC Black Box app to help you keep track of how you're doing.
At renewal, you’ll get a good driving discount if you’ve driven well.
This way of insuring has helped many drivers get more affordable insurance, and we're making it work for even more groups of people.
