What is erratic or careless driving?

Erratic or careless driving means not driving in a smooth, controlled way.

We give you feedback on the smoothness of your driving, which covers acceleration, braking and cornering.

Acceleration

You may be showing careless acceleration when you're putting your foot down to get out of the way for oncoming traffic - because you didn't do your observation carefully enough.

Aggressive acceleration can also appear when you're leaving a lower speed limit. Try to control the urge to slam the accelerator down. You should only start gently increasing speed when you're actually in the next speed limit zone.

Acceleration should always be controlled and gradual, coming up to speed in a way that is predictable for other drivers. Nothing should be sudden in driving except a genuine emergency stop.

Braking

As above, the only braking that should be a sharp stop is an emergency stop - and most drivers only ever do a few emergency stops in their whole driving careers.

Having to brake suddenly means you're not looking up ahead on the road to see what's going to affect you. If you focus on the car right in front of you, you're stuck reacting to what they're doing, rather than preparing.

Always leave enough space in front of you to stop safely, and prepare to brake gently.

Cornering

Sharp cornering is nearly always because you didn't lose enough speed in preparation for the corner. You should gradually brake to lose most of the speed before the bend, steer smoothly through it, then accelerate gently out of the bend.

You should always try to avoid braking in a corner, because you're asking the car to fight against the force carrying it forward - which could make you lose control entirely.

Work on these things to improve your smoothness feedback.
