What is a UTR number?

A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC in the UK that identifies you (or a company) for tax purposes.

Why is it important?

For self-employed / sole trader onboarding, verifying the correct tax reference number is important because it helps confirm:

  • where individuals are registered for tax

  • whether they may be liable to pay tax in the UK (or in another country).

Why do Raise need this?

This supports our compliance procedures, reduces onboarding errors, and helps ensure individuals are set up correctly from the start.

What If I am not based in the UK?

Non-UK Sole Traders

Where can I add this?

When onboarding as a sole trader / self-employed individual, you must enter your tax reference number in the 'Company Registration Number' field.

More information about what we need to onboard a sole trader can be found here

It is also essential that you upload proof of your tax reference number, ideally an official letter issued by your government, to the ‘Other’ option under Documents.
