How do I set up my phone at the game?

Where to put your phone and how to frame the shot for a great stream.

Three rules, every sport

  • Go sideways. Landscape gets the most of the field into your shot. It's your call, but it's what we recommend.

  • Keep it steady. A tripod and phone mount work best. You can go handheld, but it may make grandma a little seasick.

  • See it all. Before you go live, make sure the screen shows the whole playing area, edge to edge. Use the zoom buttons on the capture screen (0.5x, 1x, 2x). On bigger courts, tap 0.5x to zoom out and fit more in.

Then, in this order

1. Pick a safe spot. About 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) back from the edge of the playing area, out of walkways. Stray volleyballs are undefeated.

2. Set up and check the view. Mount the phone and look at the screen: how much of the field is it capturing?

3. Then raise it. Extend the tripod up. Height sees more. Check the view one more time.

Example, volleyball: midcourt, 4 to 5 meters back from the sideline, phone tilted slightly down.

Once you're live, hands off. Set it and forget it is the whole trick.

Pro tip: turn on Do Not Disturb before you go live, so calls and pings don't interrupt the stream. More tips in Tips and tricks for recording with your phone.
