How to export your projects and content from CompanyCam to RelayCam

Export your projects, photos, tags, comments, checklists and team from CompanyCam and bring them into RelayCam. Our team can do it for you, or you can run the import yourself.

Written by Rhet Porter

What this does: you can export your projects, photos, and other content from CompanyCam and bring it into RelayCam, so your full history comes with you. You don't have to start from scratch.

Exporting copies your content. It doesn't change or delete anything in your CompanyCam account, so there's no risk in getting started.

Two ways to move your content

Most people let our team do it. If your account is smaller, you can also do it yourself.

How exporting from CompanyCam works

Both options use the same method: a CompanyCam access token. You create it in your own CompanyCam account (you need to be a CompanyCam admin). It lets RelayCam read your content through CompanyCam's API and copy it into your RelayCam account.

  • The token is yours. You create it, and you decide when it goes away. You never share your CompanyCam password.

  • It copies, it doesn't move. Your CompanyCam account stays exactly as it is until you cancel it.

  • Same thing, different name. CompanyCam calls it an "access token." RelayCam's import screen calls it an "API key." They're the same thing.

Delete the token when you're done. It gives access to your CompanyCam account, so remove it from your CompanyCam access tokens page after the move.

What you can export from CompanyCam

  • Projects, with their addresses, locations, notes, tags and files

  • Photos, with their descriptions, tags, comments, the date they were taken and GPS location

  • Videos. These have to be pulled separately, because CompanyCam doesn't offer videos through its API. Our team handles this for you.

  • Your team, with their roles and who's on each project

  • Checklists and documents

What we don't move

  • CompanyCam reports. Download the PDF of any report you'll need again, like ones for warranty or insurance, before you cancel.

  • Projects another company owns, where you're only a collaborator, and media stored in CompanyCam Groups. Tell us about these and we'll help check what's possible.

Large accounts

Over 10,000 projects? CompanyCam's API normally returns only your 10,000 most recent projects. We have a way to get past that limit, and we've moved accounts with as many as 50,000 projects. Message us before you start so we can make sure your full history comes over.

How long it takes

Most accounts finish within a few days, and many are done much sooner. The speed depends on how much content you have, and CompanyCam's API rate limits decide how fast it can be exported.

Projects and photos usually come over first, often within a day. Photo tags and comments take longer, because CompanyCam limits those requests more tightly. On accounts with years of tagged photos, that can add a few days. That's why we start early and bring your older work over first.

Option 1: We do it for you

  1. Tell us your CompanyCam renewal date. Book a call or message us using the chat bubble. We'll pick a switch date about a week before your renewal.

  2. Decide what to bring. Everything, only some people's projects, or everything with older jobs archived so your active list starts clean.

  3. Give us access. We'll walk you through creating a CompanyCam access token. You'll need to be a CompanyCam admin.

  4. We copy your older work first. Keep using CompanyCam as normal while we do.

  5. We set up your crew. Logins are ready a few days before the switch so everyone can sign in early.

  6. Switch over the weekend. Your crew uses CompanyCam through Friday. We copy anything new over the weekend, and your crew starts in RelayCam on Monday. We can adjust this to fit your business.

  7. Check and cancel. We'll email you when the move is done. Spot-check a few old and new projects, then cancel CompanyCam before it renews.

Option 2: Do it yourself

You'll need: a computer (the import isn't available on mobile), a CompanyCam admin login, and your RelayCam account. This works best for accounts with fewer than 10,000 projects that don't need videos moved.

  1. Create a CompanyCam access token. Go to app.companycam.com/access_tokens and click New Token. Select N/A from the dropdown, click Create Token, and copy the token.

  2. Open the import page. Log in to RelayCam at web.relaycam.com, then open the CompanyCam import page.

  3. Verify your token. Choose your country (it sets the phone country code for your team's numbers) and paste the token into the API Key field. Click Verify.

  4. Import. Click Import and let it run. You can stop the import at any time. When it finishes, you'll see how many projects and photos came over.

  5. Check, then clean up. Look through a few projects and photos in RelayCam, then delete your access token in CompanyCam.

If something goes wrong

What you see

What to do

Verify doesn't go through

Check that you copied the whole token and that a CompanyCam admin created it. If it still fails, create a new token and try again.

A message that your CompanyCam admin already exists in RelayCam with a different role

That email is already a non-admin member of a RelayCam account. Message us and we'll sort it out.

The import stops or shows errors

Message us with a screenshot and we'll finish it with you. Your CompanyCam data is never affected.

Tags or comments haven't shown up yet

These can take longer because CompanyCam limits those requests. Give it a few days.

Some projects are missing

CompanyCam's API normally returns only your 10,000 most recent projects, and projects owned by another company aren't moved. Message us and we'll check.

Good to know

  • Use an email for your RelayCam account that isn't already on a different RelayCam account.

  • Text your crew the start date and the RelayCam app link before the switch, so no one wonders where their jobs went.

Common questions

Can I export from CompanyCam myself?

Yes. Create an access token in CompanyCam and use it with RelayCam's import. For larger accounts, we recommend letting our team do it.

Will exporting delete or change anything in CompanyCam?

No. It only copies your content, and your CompanyCam account stays as it is.

Do I need my CompanyCam API key?

You need a CompanyCam access token, which some people call an API key. You create it in a couple of minutes at app.companycam.com/access_tokens.

I have more than 10,000 projects. Can you still move them?

Yes. CompanyCam's API normally returns only the most recent 10,000, but we have a way to bring over more, and we've moved accounts with up to 50,000 projects.

Can you move my videos?

Yes, our team can pull them separately. The self-serve import doesn't include them.

Need a hand?

Message us using the chat bubble in the corner. We're happy to do the move with you or for you.
