It doesn't have to be a family member. A close friend, partner, neighbor, or anyone you trust to be reachable works.
What makes a good emergency contact
They can be reached by phone, especially during the day
They know how to contact you in return
Ideally they don't live with you, so they can step in if something happens at home
What if my best contact is also on this application?
If the person you'd normally list (a partner or family member) is applying with you as a cosigner, pick someone else. Your emergency contact should be someone outside the household.
