Shopify allows you to continue selling products even when they are out of stock. This feature is typically used for:
Pre-orders
Made-to-order products
Backorders
Normally, if a product variant is sold out, it cannot be selected for an exchange in Returbo because there is no available stock.
However, if the Shopify setting “Continue selling when out of stock” is enabled for a variant, you can also allow exchanges for that variant in Returbo if you turn on the "Keep Selling Item When Out of Stock" setting in Returbo.
How It Works
If:
The Shopify variant has “Continue selling when out of stock” enabled
ANDThe corresponding setting is enabled in Returbo
Then:
Customers can exchange to that variant even if it is sold out.
You can send replacement items (for example, in complaint cases) from sold-out variants that allow overselling.
Enable the Setting in Returbo
Go to the Returbo app
Click Settings
Go to Request settings
Select Exchanges
Scroll down to “Keep selling items when out of stock”
Enable the setting
Once enabled, customers will be able to create exchanges for variants that have overselling activated in Shopify.
How to Enable “Continue Selling When Out of Stock” in Shopify
For this feature to work, it must first be activated in Shopify.

Below is a general overview:
For New Products
When creating a product:
Go to Products in Shopify admin
Create a new product (or open an existing one)
Under the Inventory section:
Make sure Track quantity (Track inventory) is enabled
Tick Continue selling when out of stock
Once this is enabled, the variant can be sold even when the stock reaches 0.
Bulk Update for Existing Products
To enable this for multiple products at once:
Go to Products → All products
Select the products you want to edit
Click Edit products
In the bulk editor, click Columns (or “Add fields”)
Add the field Continue selling when out of stock
Tick the checkbox for the products/variants you want to allow overselling for
Click Save
