The less time spent typing patient notes in means more time to spend face-to-face helping patients. To help you do this, Clerk makes customizing SOAP Note Macros a breeze!

To start, head to the Settings and select Soap Note Macros.

There are two main parts to creating Macros: the Verbiage and the Options. The Verbiage is created out of the Soap Note Macros part of your Settings, and the Options are created out of your Soap Note Macro Options.

The screenshot below shows the different key areas to focus on when creating Macros:

  • The Macro Label

  • The Note Type

  • The Methodology Type

  • Variables / Options

While everyone creates Macros a bit differently, the easiest way to get started is to begin writing out the Verbiage you will want to use, with placeholders for where you would like to insert your Options, and then create the Options afterwards. In the screenshot below, the placeholders for where the Options should go have been placed between brackets:

Once you have the Verbiage written out, head back over to your Soap Note Macro Options and select + Add a Macro Option. This will direct you to a screen where you can enter the name of the Option and select the Field Type:

The different Field Types are as follows:

  • Text: an open text field that allows you to write in anything that cannot be selected or chosen

  • Select: select one option from a list

  • Multiselect: select more than one option from a list

  • Date: select a date

  • Time: select a time

  • Datetime: select a date and time

An important thing to keep in mind when creating Options with Select and Multiselect is that you will want to make sure the wording in those Options flow with the Verbiage of your Macro. For instance, let's edit the example above to create a more specified description of your patient's condition that now expands beyond New Patients. Your Options may flow more in a sentence structure, as shown below:

This Macro Option now flows as a sentence that help create a bigger picture of what your patient is experiencing:

And just like that! You're on your way to documenting exactly what you need to for your patients! πŸ“‘
